Default Suij's I'm on a budget rockfighter build.

A quick look at how I went from a standard rs10 to this

I started out with with an entry level HBX rockfighter which showed its limitations pretty early on, was still a reasonable start. Stock servos clapped out early on and replaced with MG996 from eBay.

First things to go we're the 4 wheel steer, so I could qualify for 2.2 comps. I also made new lower links from stainless tube and replaced the factory 3 link upper with a 4 link and new adjustable mount. I also changed the shocks from a link mount setup to an axle mount, using some m3 computer PCB standoffs to get some extra length. Also scored a set panther cougars on berg rims to replace the hard tyres it came with off the gumtree.

This all improved performance out of sight but I new I still wanted more from it.

I was toying with the idea of making a switch style dig with a servo, but I also had a flysky GT3C tx that I got a hack kit for. This pushed me to decide to go dual Esc and try out the mixing capabilities. With my tight budget in mind I started scouring the forums for options.
While a swap to 540 motors from the factory 380's was an option, it would leave a lot clearance issues with shocks and links. With the idea of being a little different in mind, I decided to give brushless outrunners a go.

Found these 2632 sized 1000kv units on eBay for $12 and 2 $25 hobbywing escs to spin them while keeping the budget theme going. The outrunners mounted up to the factory motor mounts without any mods at all, and allowed me to mount the bottom of the shocks inboard of the links to help with tire clearance. After a fair bit of messing about got it all installed and running (need to tidy the wiring).

This is where it's at currently. Loving dig turns and pretty impressed by the torque and smoothness of the little motors. Future plans are metal gears and a new chassis. But these mods have to fit my budget theme so will have to wait till I see them at bargain prices.
Off to the 7th round of the W.A comp to try it out tomorrow.

Another "brushless" redcat? Hmm, It does seem to solve the clearance issues. I'm getting tempted.

Same here.
I have never played with outrunners, always herd they where low on torque....

I just did duel 320a and H&H pullers for twice that.....

Torque is not a problem.

In the first 5 mins on the rocks, I got one front wheel in hole and blew a dogbone out the side! Never had that problem on the stock motors, would have just stalled out.
Oh we'll back to the workbench.

I also have read brushless didn't product the required torque. However if you're blowing out dog bones it would seem you have torque abundant.

It looks to me like you had your steering throw over it's maximum for the dog bones. While you have the dogbone out of the car, play with it and the outdrive cup. you can see that way what your maximum steering throw should be set at. Any more, and it just binds, throws a bone, and snaps your axle housing.

+1 On the steering throw. When I trimmed those stoppers down to much I had a similar problem. Your probably going to have to use the rear ones and trim them down less. Way less.

I wouldn't trim them at all, they are pretty spot on for what the bones and cups can do.

I trimmed mine about an 1/8" at first with the stock Knuckles; seemed okay I think. Now my G.H. aluminum knuckles NEED that extra bit trimmed out of the way just to get max throw. Just don't exceed max throw.

I don't see any reason the BL motors wouldn't be awesome. 1st think, low kv=torque. If high kv motors were used then torque would be an issue.
2nd, you can run more volts. 3s easy. even higher depending on the motors.

I ran 3s on my stock rs10 xt. the esc is the same as the one in the 1/8 rig...and it will handle 3s. it just doenst have LVC. The rear motor will wear out 1st on 3s....as it always has more load when crawling and will clod stall more producing heat. and with 3s, you get more heat. So a heat sink is needed if running 3s. I found my stock rs10 xt with 390 motors on 3s lipo produced plenty of torque and a good amount of wheel speed. to me, stock wheel speed was not enough if the rocks were wet or if driving in snow.
Even on 3s, the 390 motors never damaged my gears or busted an axle. So the OP's bl motors are putting out some good torque for certain.

OP, I like your bent links!

Could you post a link for brushless motors and ESCs? I found only 2826 or 2830 BL motors, not 2632

And what about brake in neutral? Is it working with this setup?

Many thanks

Hope this link works, these are the motors I got off ebay.

Mystery NEW RC Hobbies 1000KV Outrunner Brushless Motor D2632 | eBay

The esc were Hobbywing 25Amp models. They have 100% drag brake setting which will hold the rear wheels still on carpet while the front spin when using DIG.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks, help me a lot
And how about speed and torque? Better than stock 390s?

Speed may be a bit lower, but i'm still using nimh. An upgrade to 3s is coming soon. Torque is the same or better.

Well I scored a used Y Town BJV3 chassis. Got everything all mounted up. Just need to fab a battery mount for the front axle and get myself some small lipo packs.

Got out on some rocks today. Pretty happy with how it drives. Just needs more wheel speed than my 7.2 nimh can muster. Plus need to work out a better battery mount. Splitting a 6 cell across the front and rear axles is only temporary.

Good score on the bjv3. Saw it on oneten and was thinking about grabbing it. I've always liked the look of them. I would clock your rear axle back and make some higher clearance links in the rear to really take advantage of the chassis.

Took your advice and reworked the rear links. Name: ImageUploadedByTapatalk1381908722.536356.jpg

Also put straight links on the front as was hanging up on the front of the skid at times. Will need to get back out on the rocks to test it soon.
