I cut and siped my scx-10 rubican maxxis trepador tires with my demel. I just used a thin cut off wheel, worked perfect, and the best part is it smells just like the burnout box at the drag strip!

I searched and found this thread and would like to revive it to ask a question. I see in 1:1 scale crawlers people use a heated blade to cut or slice into the tire tread. That is sipeing the tread for traction, so when we use a Dremel cut off wheel is that the same thing or is that grooving the tread? I think I will just have to experiment with some tires to find out if one is better than the other but if anyone else has experience with this let me know.

Siping an RC tire would be cutting slices in the tread with a hobby knife or razor blade. | |

So using a hobby knife to cut the thin slices in the tread might help with smooth rock surfaces and wet rocks? Cutting in to the tread with the dremel might help with rougher surfaces of rock? I have Pit bull Rock Beast 2's and I was thinking about doing the thin slices in some of the bigger lugs to get more grip on the rocks. Thank you for the info. |

Flush cutters or nips work great for removing lugs. When doing a groove a cut off wheel in the dremel is my go to tool. I don't think you'd really notice a difference between siped and non siped tires in an rc situation. |

I like to use a pair of model sprue cutters, they were well worth the $15 or so I paid.

Dug thus thread up looking for what tools to cut tires with. Used some little angled wire cutters and they worked great. But... I learned the hard way that when you cut tread off, DO NOT PULL THE TREAD WHEN YOU MAKE THE CUT. Pulling the tread will pull up rubber that you don't want to cut. In my case, I made a hole in the tire. Simple fix but still annoying. What I began doing was pull the tread up, get the cutters in place, then let go of the tread and make the cut. Made a perfect cut every time. Just thought I'd give a little bit of advise to the next guy that's never cut tires. |
