@CODYBOY
Pipe insulation was my first idea but none of the local supply stores stock it that large this far south.

@DavidH
The pool noodle is already round. Being already round, I'd assUme it's a lot easier to balance than sheet foam would be to make round. It is fairly firm but not any more so than the CI comp cut foams I have in a set on one of my Wraiths.

This last set is shortened and a soft foam stretched over it.

All my homemade foams are when I'm at "home" and "make" an order from Eddie.

I don't necessarily agree with that. I think Axial's R35 lags behind fairly substantially. But the other rubber compounds from Pitbull, ProLine, etc are close and nothing I've tried it worlds better than the other. Of course R35 still works.

They may flatten out as the foams break in...

I hardly ever see anyone trying out the DTX Scaler tires, I may need to pick up a set.

The name is a funny double-entendre - scaling obstacles, with scale vehicles...

I made some foams from 2.2 short course foams wrapped in a strip of foam I cut from an egg crate mattress topper.
I was putting them inside of a set of 2.2 BFG Krawlers to run on my basher.
While I was in there I also ran some duct tape belts on the tires.
I have yet to try them out as life has gotten in the way.
I like where you are going with this...

Brake Weight, great ideas and thread, thanks and keep us updated. I've played with cutting up some old foams and mixed and matched similar to you, but you've stepped up to a higher level, I like where this is going!

Can't beat a set of CI foams, though.

I'll be trying to make a set for my Yeti Jr. next.

Pro-Line's new foams are at least as good as CI or better imo.

After tired of water suck foams (90% creek drives) i make my own from "transport protection foams around Toyota windscreens" (Toyota mechanic)
I cut in stripes and fix with duct tape two make to rings as a double lay inside.
The inner beadlock ring with one lay lead fit slightly inside,not to tight.
Today i take the TRX4 out for a first testride on 1.9 Deepwoods (slow crawling)

Work for me (extreme slippery obstacle)

Another slippery climb ,my TRX4 are the only truck climb up to the top,maybe because of my longer wheelbase ha ha! All the other trucks fail with rollover.

I'm a little late to the party on this but this thread has got me thinking of ways to continue building on yours and others ideas. Has anyone tried using an electric turkey carver to shape the foams? Just wondering if that would make shaping any better (or worse). Also has anyone tried a thin layer of plastidip to gain stiffness? Just a couple things that came to mind as I was reading. I am new to the RC world so still learning all the tricks. It never gets old seeing how this community will think outside the box to come up with some incredible ideas. Thanks

How about using a hot wire knife like is used to cut styrofoam? I have one but no foam to try it out on.

I did a set of foams for 2.2 trophy-truck tires mounted on narrow beadlocks using yet another method:

DIY half-assed dual-stage foams

Durok, I have a ton of that foam tape at work. How is it holding up?

I've been thinking about experimenting with some stuff around the house as well, in order to make use of the unused stock foams that come with the tires.

I have not run them yet, as my Bomber build(s) are on endless hold, because I'm a procrastinating perfectionist.

I think they'd look really silly on my Ascender!

But there is absolutely no reason for them not to remain very workable - if I only used the soft stock foam, they'd likely be broken-in and even SOFTER, which is the reason why I did the mod.

This way, the stock foam can get softer during break-in, but the weatherstripping is really dense closed-cell - more like actual rubber in its feel (bouncy!), and not being exposed to sunlight and the elements means it will remain very stiff, supplying support.

True store-bought dual density foams from CI or Proline have somewhat softer closed-cell foam, and it's crushable - but this stuff is indestructible.

I wouldn't want to ONLY use this foam, it needs an outer layer of softer foam - but in combination I firmly ( bad pun alert) believe that they're gonna work out great!
