90% of machining is making the tooling for the job, the rest is cutting the parts you want. I am talking about an old school hole saw, although not exactly the same construction and style for your work. If you know the ID and OD of the circle you can calculate how the bit needs to be shaped. To make it simple, you could just make a regular lathe bit that is .11" wide on the cutting edge with a quick taper on the backside to prevent rubbing in the groove. Kinda like a parting tool but more aggressive on the backside taper. |

hmm not sure im up to that. what would be your second choice for a more standard single stick style tool? im ok if the bottom of the groove isnt perfectly square, ie curved or angled, as long as the sides are vertical/straight. the second bit in this video looks perfect THINBITŪ Face Grooving Product Demonstration - YouTube |

Do you have a grinding wheel and diamond hone? It won't take 5 minutes to make the tool you need, just like the one in the vid.

ok, That part can be done on a lathe or mill for sure, but looking at it as is it is just a simple lathe part. For that feature your looking to do on the mill, you can just get a tool made This company is who we use very often, excellent quality tools, takes a week or two AB Tools Inc You could also do that with a simple 3d program on a cnc mill and a standard endmill preferabily a bullnose or full radius style endmill. cycle time would take several minutes longer per piece, but you wouldnt have to spend 150+ for a custom tool. |

so for the groove your suggesting to do in on the mill? we already have the tool to do it on the mill, but since were doing the face on the lathe as you suggested we had hoped to also be able to do the groove too. also assumed it would be faster on the lathe than the mill?

the part shown, is easiest on the lathe and fastest on the lathe as well. |

I could certainly make the tooling for you, but going through a tool maker is a better idea. They do it for a living, wheras I just do it as part of my own tooling. There is a pic of a curved bit on the thinbit front page, just what I was trying to convey via text. The deepgroove line. |

Assuming this mystery part is a beadlock wheel, the groove is actually diffucult. I've never made one, but would probably hand grind something rather than try and order a tool. A handmade hss tool would easily last dor 150 pcs. A cutoff tool could easily be made to work. | |

I don't know what type of tooling you have available to you, but your best bet is to do what the others said and hand grind some HSS. Another slightly more expensive option would be to get a insert holder and use cutoff bits. They come in various widths, radii, and shapes. I've only use a hand ground tool for a cutoff tool once and it was on aluminum, it cut fairly well, and left a really nice finish. I would say it would be the best bet. |

I still say you should make it. You could have made 15 of em in the time you have spent researching and posting in the thread! It is a really basic shape for a tool. Take a parting tool or tool blank and grind it till it is .11" wide, then relief the back of it until it clears the groove. You make this tool and it will open up all kinds of doors for you. Nothing is worse than buying a $100 bit and breaking it in the first few minutes! If you make it yourself you can just remake it and learn instead of spending again and having to wait another 5 days or more for delivery. |

I have to agree with John....its a pretty simple bit and its honestly really easy to grind your own....and once you learn, the amount of stuff you will be able to do, for WAY cheaper, goes up. I am still a novice at it, but its pretty easy and I've made a few cool ones....having to go to my buddies to use his grinder sucks, but I got one now I just need to setup. Later EddieO Quote:

what tool should i start with to grind? is this what the finished tool will look like? square stock (.11" wide) with a angle grinded on one side? Last edited by STANG KILLA SS; 07-06-2012 at 01:31 PM. |

A 1/8" parting tool would be a good start and require the least work. If you got a quick change holder you probably have a blank, or at least a way to hold it. You will also need a bench grinder with a medium and fine grit wheel, and a diamond knife hone to dress the face of the tool. You can get away with just a medium grit wheel but it will make more work with the hone. Great resource to get you started. Grinding Your Own Lathe Tools I grind all my tools freehand and don't use a steady rest. Never been a problem for me, but some people can't do that and some cutting requires a more precise tool. Once you learn how to grind it is good to learn how to harden and anneal your tools properly. Last edited by JohnRobHolmes; 07-06-2012 at 01:33 PM. |
