If you go to mylittlemachineshop.com, they give step by step instructions on shaping HSS to make your own cutters. It aimed at the guys who have bench top lathes and mills but the lessons (and the tool steel) work for everything.

Is this metal, plastic, or wood you are forming? Pics of your tool holders could help too.

If the material you are cutting is pretty soft you can get HSS blanks and grind them down. They come in different sizes, and you grind in the shape you want. I would recommend buying american made HSS blanks, it is far more durable. It takes a little while to get used to it, I'm not all that great at it, but I've done it once with pretty good results. Just take your time, make sure you leave room to clear everything. |

| Re: 15* endmill/custom ground milling tools Telling you what tool you need for details that are not shown is difficult. the material we are cutting is a important detail, and the specificic shape is also important, I have 4 feet thick of catalogs just to select specific tools to make a cut. just saying, Last edited by tom@vp; 07-06-2012 at 06:23 PM. |

I could grind you a piece of HSS tool steel to cut face grooves into aluminum. Very easy to do. I have narrowed and regrooved dozens of beadlock wheels for guys in our local club. I'll be going into the shop tomorrow, I will try to remember to grind something up for you. | |

This will do the trick for you, ground up a piece of highspeed steel and did a test cut in a piece of 6061. Groove width came out at .115 wide so I did a little touch up and should cut right on .11 I made the groove well over .2 deep. Need to have flood coolant and clear chips a couple times. I wouldn't plunge it in one cut. |

Yeah I would say hand ground. Stang, it takes time and and a lot of screwing up until it is correct. We use radius gages and squares to check ours. I suck profoundly at off hand grinding but we have some guys that can grind them so well that look like they came off a edm. Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2 |

Just saw this Cory. If you still need any info, I will bein the shop tomorrow morning fooling around and can take pics or talk you through any thing you need to know. It was clear to me from the very first photo what you are making. 4vryng made exactly what you are needing. That is what I use for all my wheels I narrow when regrooving them. Very easy to hand grind and all you need is a bench top dual wheel 6" grinder. A fine stone and a coarse stone. Pm me if you need anything or ever have any questions like this again.
