Seems like this is a good thread to ask. I have a Phoenix portal builder's kit, and I want to buy the straight axles for it. I'm assuming I need new links? |

Comparing links in the portal and straight Phoenix manuals, it looks like the differences are: Front upper link: 106mm straight/110mm portal Panhard/drag link: 98mm straight/93mm portal Tie rod: 148mm straight/145.5mm portal Rears appear to be basically the same. If you use 80mm shocks then you might find the portal panhard and drag link close enough

Good info right there @twade! I just assumed that both sets of links were the same. I just built both the straight axle and portal axle builders kit with the titanium link sets and thought they were the same. I should have checked and measured them before I installed them! |

And gearing? Is it the same? I've not looked at anything but I have this feeling that the portal and straight versions must have something different with trans or dif gearing. No?

The Straight axle has 56t spur and 13t pinion Portal has 52t spur and 15t pinion Ring and pinions are the same The portal Phoenix also comes with overdrive portal gears front and rear. Also, the Portal still has a lower final drive ratio compared to the non portal version Last edited by twade984; 01-11-2023 at 07:32 PM.

So the spur gear compensates for the portal gearing. Yeah, I guess that's all that would be needed. Thanks T!

Just finishing up my first Vanquish product build, Phoenix straight axle. Pretty impressed with the quality of the parts, its is a roller right now waiting a on a few electronic parts ot finish up. I built it completely stock as in the build manual. Looking forward to getting it on the rocks/trails to compare it to what I have been used to for the past 15 years, Axial SCXs and RC4WD TR2s. Seems I let my Green Star lapse. need to fix that. |
