anyone break anything on the gen8 yet

i thought i broke something but the screw came out of the pinion lol but the bearing fell out not realy broke but down till i can get a new one
Mine did the same thing but I noticed it just before the screw came all the way out. I noticed there wasn't any loctite on it so I put some on. The front has loctite as I checked it so it didn't do the same thing. New guy on the rear axle assembly that day?

Mine fell from a 4ft high wooden slat bridge today, body popped off and rear bumper broke off. The magnets don't let go on rollovers and minor falls, but did on this one which I am glad for. The body would have been damaged more if it hadn't popped off. Both rear tail light clear covers also cracked, but it is all a very cheap fix and the parts were in stock at red cat. Ordered and on the way.

Is there any upgrade for the portal gears? I was not able to find any except the stock ones, which seem to break quite often. I'm getting my gen 8 this Friday. It will be my first "real" rc car (wltoys are garbage).

I don't want to be stuck in a loop of buying stock parts that are prone to breaking, but I bought the gen 8 knowing well that there would be a shortage of upgrade parts compared to Axial or Traxxas. I just couldn't get over the beautiful body and chassis, plus being quite a bit cheaper than the competition.

The portal gears aren't as big of an issue as you've heard. There's thousands (Redcat says well over 10,000) of Gen 8's on the market & relatively few are experiencing issues. The ones that break theirs get on the "Redcat is junk" bandwagon & cry about it all over the internet. My Gen 8 is from the first shipment & I have yet to break anything. I run it hard on the Arizona rocks. However, if I do break a portal gear, it's not the end of the world. They're cheap, every local hobby shop has plenty in stock & they're east to replace. The best thing you can do is locktight all screws before you run it & routinely check all the hardware. Once things come loose & go unchecked, things start breaking. They're good trucks & the aftermarket is supporting them. Just use common sense & have fun!

Not complaining about my 8cat. Just letting people know what I've broken as per the thread title. I've had redcats off and on from day 1.
Gen8 is an outstanding truck for their first in house design.
I run the 8cat just as hard as I run my Axial rigs. It's a toy after all. Cheaper to fix or carry out of the woods then a 1:1. Lol!!
I keep extra portal gears with me just in case.
The body is great but big and heavy for our trails. Scout body sits in the box along with the inner fenders.
I run the Power wagon cab.
All trucks have flaws hence the need for after market support.

think of the portal gears as fuses they blow everyonce in a while but it usaly save another part from failing and the portal gears are extremely easy to change and there cheap

i would rather have a bullet proof axle set up but it is what it is

I wonder how many of these breakages are from eliminating the slipper clutch which is an option with the stock parts?

I agree, Or from the slipper being too tight from factory. Mine was so tight it wouldn't slip. I adjusted it and haven't broke a portal gear since.

my slipper clutch was looser than it should be when the gear broke i tightened it up after i replaced the gear i think it has to do with the fact that the gear isent hardened and the whole the pin sits in hogs out with time till it gets thin and breaks

and my end points are adjusted so there is no binding at all

it just wore out

lasted way longer than my vanquish cvds for the scx10 though so no real complaints

Ahh. Broke a portal gear today, Also one of my wheels. The part the wheel hex goes into broke, allowing the hex to just spin in the wheel. Good thing Redcat includes a spare wheel+tire and 2 extra portal gears. Hoping I can talk to Redcat support to see if I can get replacements.

I've only had about 10 hours and 10-15 miles on the car so far, and I've been treating it like a baby. No hard stop or goes and nice smooth throttle. If it even gets a little stuck I usually just back off and try a different way instead of trying to power through it.

Besides that, I'm loving my gen8. It just doesn't care about most hills or obstacles. Also even though it probably has close to double the number of gears in my cheap Chinese wltoys, it's so much quieter. No more hearing the car from a mile away :D. I actually quite like the gear whine of a gen8 as it almost sounds like some sort of truck with a big turbo.

It will be very interesting to see how they CNC the gear. When I looked at it I thought it would just move the weak spot to another part of the gear.
