Cutting a motor commutator & motor tweaks

Do you know why they have laydown brushes?

Because I said so?

Think about the way that the current switches as it hits the different poles of the motor. "thumbsup" Normally, stand up brushes would be better (torque) because it drops the field quicker. Laydown brushes hold the field longer (RPM). If you used standup brushes on that motor, it would produce too much torque (maybe not even run :ror because the OD of the comm is so large.

All this is my understanding anyway. :roll::lmao::lmao:

Honestly, I think it will run, probably just get hot because the voltage will be on the pole longer than normal. This is when you need a dyno. :twisted:

I've put standups on motors that were originally equipped with laydowns, and had large comms. Worked great. As expected, it reduced the rpms and amp draw quite a bit.

it was like a flip flop back in the day with those big comm motors. they came out with laydown brushes, racers liked the power increase.

then the amps got high the smaller the comm got and brushes wrapped around, motors heated up. Mike Reedy designs a bigger comm with laydown brushes, lessoned the brush wrap lowering amps.

Tougher part was getting the power back while slinging some extra rotating mass. Offroad we use to just hang an extra tooth and were good.

Serious ? though... anyone know where to find any large comm armatures by themselves? I have a ton of can setups and brush hoods out the yang, but cant find any arms by themselves...

Have fun with that one. Its hard to find anything brushed now unless its old motor lots. I have seen a few brushes and springs, but thats about it.

Good luck finding any big comm arms unwound.... I bought reedy out of the kr arms...and the new 10mm arms have only been shipped with motors.... So there is not much out there. I will look this weekend and see what I may have....

I got plenty of brushes for every motor type.... Same with springs.

I'm running one of HH 35t Yoko motors and it has standup brushes and the 9mm comm. Works very well. I think I'm going to have to stock up on brushes, springs and etc, online retailers are dropping them from their line.

Guess which one has an 11 millimeter comm.

I know where you can find the rhino style motor,but it is in low winds
like 8t,9t. $60 each,but you can rewind em possibly.
I think the winds are brazed instead of soldered.

I actually ordered from axiom this time. they had the p94s i like in stock cheap and its free shipping in the us.

You will never get a 8t turn from fantom unwound where you can really use the arm again.....like my arms, they use the REALLY good epoxy. The stuff is pretty much welded to the arm, so no really undoing it.

I have enough brushes and springs to last a good 5 years......for pretty much all motors. The site will be back up soon.....so you will be able to order whatever you need.

All the nifty tools you guys want too.
