Dudley Deadbolt's Adventure Thread by T-money

Had Dudley out for another fun weekend, this time we headed up to the Uinta Mountains again for 801rcc's "Altitude Sickness" event. The Saturday event consisted of a dirt and rock course that covered .75 of a mile. We spent another few hours and logged 1/2 a mile just fun crawling on Sunday after a great night of camping.

The terrain is definitely hard and challenging with lots of chunky rock to play on. Dudley did quite well through the event and made all but 1 line through out the course. The stock 27t motor did finally die at gate 155 though. Keep in mind this motor has seen a ton of water and has had no maintenance what so ever. A quick stop to throw in another 27t motor and Dudley was up and running. Sunday was a blast too, with us finding a number of tough lines and some little jumps to enjoy. Sunday however, wasn't without incident. After deciding to call it a day J-rad challenged me to a race back to the cars. Well lets just say I didn't pick the right line and Dudley went for a ride off a cliff. Total distance was near 80' down. It was tumble, tumble, tumble, about 30' then straight down another 30' to a smashing hit into some boulders, then tumble, tumble, another 20' before coming to a rest on his wheels at the very bottom. Dudley was able to drive back to the car where further inspection found a bent chassis and the body was cracked pretty good, but everything else was just fine

I didn't get to many pics because someone forgot their phone charger  but here are the ones I grabbed

They work pretty good for general trail driving. I'd say that the dual rate setup is better though, just because their are more setup options, so you could dial in your setup much better with. Of course if you want to go for simplicity the single rates work very well and have less parts. Might be better for trail repairs, less to keep track of while wrenching in less than ideal locations.

Info on the stock springs:
AX31145 Spring Grey 12.5x60mm

Thanks, have you driven two side by side with the dual vs single shock spring setup? Less parts to lose during trail repair is good and I'm not sure that the dual spring makes any difference with the SCX, the longer stiffer spring almost never moves on mine, just the shorter soft spring. Sidehill contest etc would be interesting with the two different spring setups. "thumbsup"

A few pics of the carnage Dudley took on Sunday

You can see the front bumper pushed over

The crack in the hood

Bent frame

Are you going to just bend the frame back or?

ShoeGoo and drywall tape time for the body.

You can't have too many camping and crawl trips. 8)

One of my friends (J-rad) has a G6 with the dual rate springs, while just slow crawling and running technical lines we couldn't really tell a difference but at speed (not that these SCX10's have much with the stock motors) the dual rates did seem to soak up the bumps better. Dudley with the single rate springs would seem to bounce around and drift where ever the trail took him. J-rads G seemed to hold it's line much better and looked smoother.

I plan to just bend the frame back. I've had a few SCX10's in the past and the frames can be straightened very easily, and this rig is light weight and budget friendly so a re-worked frame will be just fine "thumbsup"

I almost forgot, I started to get some lights going for Dudley so when we have to make our return trips down to the cars well have something to light our way "thumbsup"

So far we just got the rock lights in so I still have to do the headlight and taillights and I'm still debating on the light bar.

I sized up a Vaterra light strip from the Slick Rock and it looked like a perfect fit for the rock sliders. A little Shoo Goo to hold them in place. Then just run the wires over to the Rx. Pretty easy install for rock lights "thumbsup"

A couple pics of the work so far

Subd. This is an awesome and unique thread! My new Deadbolt shipped today , cant wait to run it, really impressed with how yours has performed.

I bent my frame last year fairly badly (I don't know if it was as badly as yours) , but I repaired it by stripping the frame and tweaking it in a vice with a hammer and bending . You really can't tell. The reason for stripping it is to check to make sure both frame rails are parallel. And flat. Or you could buy new frame rails but at like 45.00 that's kind of stupid when a new frame kit is like 65.00. Or axial warranty..... Tell them your kid broke it ...... I'm just sayin.

Patience is not one of my virtues...I came into a bit of extra cash today (thanks CL buyer guy "thumbsup") and was wanting to take advantage of Tower Hobbies current monthly special to score a DB/new SCX10 on the cheap, but almost all of the Axial products they carry is back-ordered until "Early August",taking them out of this month's special (I for eg,$38 off of $345 spent, free shipping, etc),sigh. The only (RTR) SCX10 I saw that they had "In Stock" was the Trail Honcho RTR (which includes a free 3000 Mah stick pack as well),making it $317 and change shipped....so not having any patience,I ordered one  It won't be a Honcho for long though, been itching to buy a Proline Cherokee or Comanche body, and I have a few parts on hand I'll swap out (well...I have a new full set of 4 Proline Swamper TSL's mounted on Axial beadlocks anyways :ror:) and sell the stock parts removed I guess.

ANYWAYS,just excited a new rig's headed my way,not to hijack, cause I'll still be following along with GREAT interest here "thumbsup"

I am the same way. It's killing me not getting paid till next week, I am just sitting here watching videos and reading up on upgrades till I can get it.

I am also going to get mine through Tower, I highly doubt it will be in stock Thursday. If not I will have to decide on which to get if I want to get if I want to get it on discount. It will probably come down to either a dingo kit or the honcho by the looks of things.

On Topic, I cant wait to see some more pics or even a video :)

Plus 2 on the pics/video (your pics are awesome,NaZ-T) "thumbsup"

SteeleAce,Tower will undoubtedly have another special for August too...I just don't expect it to be as good as July's (based on their emphasizing of Independence Day in July),but I've been wrong before "thumbsup"

Thanks for all the compliments guys.

I have been having a blast with Dudley and to date Dudley is actually the cheapest R/C I own, and has seen more drive time than 90% of them
That makes Dudley #1 in my fleet when it come to money spent Vs fun and enjoyment "thumbsup"

Made it out again for our weekly trail run. This time out we hit up Mill B South (Lake Blanche)

This trail is 2.9 miles long and takes you up a beautiful canyon to 3 small alpine lakes Lake Blanch, Lake Lillian, and Lake Florence. Due to us running in the late evening we didn't make it to the lakes. Even though it got dark we pushed forward till we logged 2 miles of good driving before turning back. The trail was a lot of fun and had good obstacles spaced out pretty evenly down the trail so their was plenty of fun for a 1.9 scale rig. If you wanted to hit all the hard lines this trail would likely take 4+ hours to complete, so when I have more time Dudley and I will be back to complete this awesome trail.

This was the first time that I really got to see the rock lights in action, and I must say they worked great. Now I just need some forward lights so I can see whats coming up on the trail better.

Of course some pics to share Dudley's adventure
