well i dismantled the versante beadlocks again. swaped the tires onto the mayhams and swaped out to his wide offset hubs. added 1" im at 11.1" wide now. i have to admit i really love the look. but with the offset so much the tires swing alot now. i assume this is whats refered to as tire scrub? well its making the front tires rub on my bumper, grill, and boatsides now. i assume this is the advantage of the XR mod? it gains the width i need, but moves the pivot point out too? so the tire pivots within itself instead of swinging in an arc? ready to pounce! Only 100% pure, organic, charcoal filtered and imported from a uninhabited island kind of mud. Looks really good. |

Yeah, Cory, as Tim stated, that is indeed the scrub radius and you just increased it a ton by adding wide spacers. Besides the obvious track width, the only advantage is that it can sometimes provide some "reach" for your front tires when trying to crest an obstacle. But for the most part, I think a large scrub radius mostly has nothing but drawbacks. I'd either run Wraith axles with narrow wheels or wheels with lots of backspacing or do the XR mod to make an axle that's between the width of an AX10 and a Wraith.

BTW, Cory, do you have any bump travel at all or full droop? It looks WAY low!

no bump steer, and hardly any axle swing. it was a pain in the ass but the end result came out really good. ive got the panhard length so that when the susp. is at exactly half its cycle, the axle is perfectly centered. with the panhard rod so flat it doesnt arc much. yeah final ride height will probly be 1/4" to 3/8" higher than it sits now. i like to build with the shocks fully compressed to iliminate any clearance issues, the slowly bring i up once done to desired ride height. works like a charm. but yes typically i run my rigs very low. well i went ahead and did the XR mod to fix my tire scrub. parts! since there were no pics or instructions on the beef tube thread, i didnt have a clue what was needed to do this mod. so i just guessed and figured things out as i went. no clue if its right but i made it work i guess. first i dremeled the inside and outside of the outer part of the axle case smooth removing the raised parts. also i needed a way to secure the Beef Tubes to the housing , origonally i was going to use the origonal case Cs set screw holes, but after dremeling there was only 1mm of material left. So the area between the shock mounts looked the thickest and inconspicuous so i drilled a hole there. next i drilled and taped matching holes in the Beef Tubes then i screwed the Tubes to the housings, and then drilled and taped holes for the Cs then reassembled everything and put everything back on the truck. just need to make new steering and tie rods. ill also probly move the panhard rod mount out to the C. making the rod longer further eliminating axle swing. Killer job and write up. pic's are awesome. Wen you are done with the steering linkage, please post the track width. I think i'll try this mod if it gets me to the width i'm looking for. |

thanks guys! it added about 1.2" to my width over the SCX setup. and sadly didnt improve the problem as much as i thought it was going to. the XR knuckles are about .25" thicker than the SCX knuckles. so the .6" per side you gain in width, the pivot point is only moving out .35" per side. current track width is 11.25" |

So what problems didn't it improve on? You were hoping for wider? Somebody need some Wraith axles? |

i was hoping it would improve my scrub radius. which it did a little, but not near as much as it could have because of the XR knuckles being longer/thicker than the SCX ones, ie hex further distance from the pivot point. im going to see if i can shave down the hubs and go to thinner hexes to try to improve it more. no i definatly dont want wider. this is VERY wide for me. |

Do you have an old set of Berg wheels laying around? Try them, you'll be amazed at what an extra bit of backspacing will do for you. Something tells me we'll see a new set of wheels come out of this project .
