Never done the mod but I would think you would need to hold the yoke in a vice to secure it, and go slow with the drill bit.

If you do these by hand like I did you'll need to use a step-drill and not a drill bit. A drill bit cut's in a triangle pattern, so by the time you get the size your need the yoke will have a oval shape to it. A step-drill is WAY easy and cuts a perfect circle. Hold the yoke in a pair of Channel locks and go slow. Good luck. |

Hmmmm, now I didn't think of that. Looks like I will hit up Lowes Depot on the way home. Thanks.

I used a UNI-bit as well. Worked ok, then I finished the depth needed with a drill bit. Didn't turn out too bad for my first driveshaft. With that said my next shaft will be done on a lathe. G. |

i know i have experienced this myself and probably most here who have done plastic drilling before my buddy said for lexan and plastics like that you can detune the tip of the drill bit so it doesnt just auger in as much(you'd have to make the cut face a little more square as oppossed to a surf wave lip like most bits have), does that give you the idea? he knew about some other ways to do it as well, but he said that most bits don't go down to these sizes we are using on these rc's i also liked his idea to put the yoke in the drill chuck and then have the drill bit fixed solid and do it that way, cave man lathe if you will |

Since running the Maxx shafts, I haven't had any issues with yoks or driveshafts.

Last weekend I did this mod and the driveshafts are holding up great now. Got through a whole scale comp plus some extra trail riding with no driveshaft issues.

OR you can use a end-mill bit instead of a drill bit..... works much better

i like the metal driveshaft yokes, are the shafts metal? you'd think there would be a metal shaft to work with those already if not. or be close enough to mod at least, any part numbers?

Just did this mod today, turned out Awesome. The lathe was definantly the ticket for getting the Traxxas T-maxx yokes drilled tho. Thought I'd save some time and vice it up and hand drill it, NO NO NO, that don't work. Drill press maybe, but I did use the dremel to cut the ears off the stock yoke. This is a seriously great drive shaft mod that anyone should be able to do. Gives a lot of BEEF to the drive train and is much better and cheaper than changing out steel yokes only to use a "smaller" traxxas shaft anyway. here's my pics.

Glad to see that this is still one of the best upgrades without getting MIP's and cutting/welding them. I just switched to Lipos and shattered to stock shafts and a CVD in about 5 minutes! I don't have a lathe so will be trying the step-drill bit or a uni-bit. |
