Yeah...that axles OK I guess but does it charge cell phones?

Nice work Jake. Seriously the sickest axle in RC history.

Yep Thanks again Will!

This project couldn't happened without the help of vendors like RcBros and Obviously Y-Town, plus a lot of you guys answering my texts and calls about random engineering theories at all hours of the day and night

The CF tubes are .5" .060 wall. They're a little beefier than what Dravpinr used for his CF berg tubes, so they should hold up to plenty of comp abuse.

Just my guess.

Axle in incredible Jake. One extra bag o ketchup chips for you.

Exactly right Long screw through all 3 axle plates and threaded into the back side of the upper link standoff. A shorter Ti screw runs through both upper links and the brace and then threads into the outside of the standoff, so that the links are removable from the outside. The brace wasn't attached to the housing in the pics, but it will be permanently epoxy'd to the long side tube.

Thats how I thought the brace would be attached the the axle tube but wasn't really sure how secure it would be. But with what you described, sounds beefy.

Awesome. Any chance these will be available in the future? I'm definitely intrigued.

Here's a part of what I've been working on all summer

There are several great aftermarket axles/housings out there right now, but none of them fit with the setup ideas that I'm shooting for on this rig. After lots of planning, I set out to build something of my own. Currently, I believe that this rear axle has by far the most clearance and lightest weight of anything on the rocks without sacrificing too much strength.

The gear layout is based on an XR10 rear, but a few of the gear pairs have been flipped, and the entire cluster has been rolled in so that the motor sits much closer to the diff. All of the gears have been replaced with a mix of aluminum and steel 48p pinion gears. The diff itself is gone, and has been replaced by a 36t pinion gear and a 1-piece shaft. Since I'm using a 1-piece shaft, I can ditch the lockouts and use flanged bearings right in axle tubes. The result of all this is an axle that feels both stiffer and much more compact than before.

I also tried something new and went with a 3d printed axle case. The case is made out of ABS and has held up much better than expected so far.

The new axle tips the scales at a dainty 93g, over 2oz lighter than my lightened XR setup. The RTR weight has now officially reached the ridiculous level

A front axle is in the works, but I have decided to hold off on it until after Nationals. The design on the rear axle alone has been enough to make me temporarily insane There are still a few bugs to work out on this one too, but it has been worth the trouble.

Glad she's debugged and ready for action. Been a long time but definitely worth your hard work. Some more rock rash and she'll be ready to go. Great job. Fronts will be way cool.

Got a ton of goodies from the postman today, among them was these little gems from Holmes Hobbies.

I remember seeing some other gravity defying, fridge related pictures before, so I had to try it

Its going to be a fast and furious week of building before we leave for AZ next week. The clock is running. Tick, tick, tick...

But they gotta stay put rotated 90 degrees from that so they'd (not) roll down to the floor.

Our UPS guy looked irritated, he was here a few times today, haha. I was unaware they did more than one run.

any of you that haven't had a chance to fondle this thing yet are missing out.

I have been constantly blown away by Jake's mechanical genius since we met, and he has outdone himself on this one. Watching it come together has been awesome, I can't wait to see how they work together at nats-- look out everyone else competing

Those motors are amazing looking Jake, and I am sure they will work just like that too!

Hopefully you won't see me walk away with them in AZ....

just kidding...

Is John planning on producing more of those little motors in the future?

That he is.. in the puller motor vendor thread, JRH even says after some time these cans will replace the stage 4 cans on the 540 motors..

Edit. Post 868.. as long as I'm reading it right.

I would prefer they didn't stick at all, but we are already at 140% back iron thickness VS a regular motor. The better it works at being a fridge magnet, the worse it is at being a motor.

I'll post up specs on the pair tomorrow. In the mean time, ponder that the KV of these 35t motors are 20% higher than a 540, but the rotor length is 30% shorter. Its a net positive torque density increase, and net reduction in waste watts per unit of torque output. Peak torque at armature saturation goes down by 30%, but the batteries in use don't come close to outputting enough amperage to hit saturation nor could the gears take it anyway.

You are ahead of 99.9% of everybody where it counts! I've just been working on these for Jake for (too) many months, building protos and redesigning, finding a balance here before having them tested by #1 drivers.

These will be production in about a month. I'm just testing a few more magnet shapes before getting the big pile made. All other parts are here and ready. Currently they are called the Puller 400, but we are kicking around the idea of renaming the Puller line to helpfully reflect the size.
