Decided to cook some chicken sandwiches tonight, and the Pliny told me to wrap mine in bacon. My girlfriend passed on the offer, so here are the before and after pics......I think I won

Well I remembered a reason why i started brewing beer. I went to go get a couple Plinys to try it against my beer and ended up getting all this beer, oh well.

As for my taste test with with my Pliny clone it didn't go so well. The beer doesnt look, smell or taste the same. I think I messed up somewhere. The look is the first part that got me, its not really as dark as it looks in the picture but darker non the less. What I don't understand though is how it got that dark. Going into the bottling bucket and sitting in my secondary it looked a goldish yellow like the real Pliny, yet in my glass looks nothing like it. I know the reason for the darkness would be from the malt extract and and accidentally burning it but I still was not expecting the darkness. The smell, is almost the same but the real Pliny has a little more aroma and for some reason smells fresher. As for the taste of my clone, the dryness and smoothness is there and most of the hop characteristics but mine seems to have an off flavor that Im not quite sure what it is. I'd have to try it again to try to give an explanation of the off flavor but im really hoping another weak will work that flavor out. Also a little more time might help with the extra burn mine has from the alcohol. My lesson that I learned from this is to try brewing simpler beers and work my way up. I will brew this in the future again maybe when i have some more batches under my belt.

What type of hops did you use for the Pliny clone?

Speaking of hops.

Quote:
The term noble hops traditionally refers to five varieties of hop which are low in bitterness and high in aroma. They are the central European cultivars, Hallertau, Tettnanger, Spalt, Polish Lublin and Saaz.[22] They are each named for a specific region or city in which they were first grown or primarily grown.

Not a fan really...

Is the strange taste you're getting kinda "green" in flavor?

Okay then. Only reason I ask is because you have Columbus hops in there and I'm not a big fan of Columbus hops. It comes across as green or woody to me. My wife thinks the same.

On a side note. My wifes coworker is moving to Australia and just gave me all his brewing equipment! I already had my own but now I have 3 glass carboys and a bunch of other stuff! Still small compared to some of you guys but hey, it was free!

A few I've had lately....Really liked the Grand Cru, and I have yet to find a beer from Stone that I don't like.

Tonights beer. There is some good shit coming out in cans recently. From what I hear, we may be seeing more craft brews in cans in the future.

I love The Reverend! I have a Belgian Triple I make that is very close.....my girlfriend keeps asking when I'm going to make it again.

I used to not like beer in a can (I will not drink it Sam I am), but that's before all the good stuff started coming out in cans. It makes sense really.....one of the biggest enemies of beer is light.

Hoping to take off a bit early today......I have a date with my Mash Tun

Yep. They have really stepped up the can quality lately. There is a local microbrewery that only puts out cans and kegs. They have started coating the inside of the cans to keep the metal taste away.

10 gallons of beer for me!

If you sing it to the tune "Happy Birthday", it's really quite festive.

Speaking of cans, last night I had this from Oskar Blues:

It was pretty damn good. Reminded me of Dogfish90.

Oskar Blues is right here in Longmont, and I haven't had that one yet

......I might have to stop at the brewery and try this one straight from the source.
