Default What is it with "lower 48"?

I constantly see people saying in their for sale ads that they ship to the "48".

Someone explain this to me?

Shipping is typically higher to Alaska and Hawaii so people put the "lower 48" or "first 48" (as in states) to avoid having to pay higher shipping costs.

It is the same price to ship an item from NY to Hawaii as it is to ship it from NY to NJ if you ship USPS priority.

Next excuse?

If they are using UPS as their prefered method then it makes sense. If it is USPS then there is no cost difference.

Never got why people said "lower 48" though since HI isn't "higher" than the "48" states.

Not everyone ships by USPS because of reliability and tracking info. Next silly question.

That too. I wasn't going to bring it up.

I have had no problems with items being delivered here and I can log on to usps tracking and see where the package is at any given time. Even tracked one coming from Canada.

Next excuse?

Maybe people don't realize that Alaska and Hawaii are part of the U.S. I would think most were referring to Canada and other places.

I am one of the silly poeple that put it in there.

Not sure why I put lower 48, but I am putting it in there for the buyers that may be from canada or other countries. I never really thought of it as excluding AK or HI, and yes I know we have 50 states.

I am going to make a conscious effort to include those other two states of ours. Forgive me, and you will be saved

You have to pay extra for tracking (which most people don't realize) and it's great that you haven't had any problems but a lot of people have.

Are you in Hawaii now?

I know people will usually ship anywhere...they are most likely trying to cover themselves when they include the shipping in the price. That way if someone from Canada orders, they are covered (and rightly so) in asking for more money to ship.

The ones I don't get is when they say they will ship to the Lower 48 or Continental US only. That's just being lazy.

I could see it as being misinformed with regards to USPS shipping, but I am having a hard time understanding how it's considered lazy.

I will ship to any state, but don't bother with shipping international as it's too much a PIA.

Yes SOME companies do ship here but cost extra. And some other companies only offer free shipping to only 48 states.. Just for do a build you gotta order from different companies. Just to save money.

When I ship I don't trust USPS unless its a smaller package. Though I make sure to include UPS GRD as the means of shipment in my sales.

So when I sell something for $100 shipped, that shipping price only includes what I estimate to the Continental US (no AK or HI). Gladly would ship to those and even use USPS, but only on the buyers request and understanding that I do not prefer it when selling.

Wait, Hawaii is a state now?!?

It's funny...I read a story last week on the news talking about low voter turnout in Hawaii and it said that one of the reasons for that is because a lot of people who live there don't consider themselves American Citizens.....that the US illegally occupies that land.
