Default Building new PC-advice..

So I have been pushing the limits of my current machine with my video stuff and some times I have to change my game plan due to the machine.

So this year I really need to build a new desktop that can handle the job and I havent kept up with the current technology.

So my requirements would be 64bit, good video card (with dual monitor ability) and lots of memory.

So what parts should I look at?

Mike, Check out Carey Holzman on Youtube. He has some good vids on building your own PCs. Each build is unique to applications such as work, gaming, video editing etc... Each build has a complete list of parts prices and links to the parts. Some of the videos are 2.5+ long, very in depth

When I bought my cad computer (which has specs like you are looking for) it was cheaper to buy a refurb from HP than it was to buy a bare bones kit from Tiger or piece it together. I use a home built machine for my cnc controller since the ideal machine isn't readily available anymore.

Why buy similar hardware for 3x the cost just to go buy a copy of windows to run on it just so you can use the programs you need that aren't available on a Mac?

No mac--I have way too much invested in software to make any change over to a different platform.

As of right now I have zero budgeted for it but figured if I could get an idea of what I need to spend--I will make it happen...

Thanks for the input so far

Pick Parts, Build Your PC, Compare and Share - PCPartPicker

Without a budget I have no idea what to suggest.

Under $5,000 is totally different than over $500 but under $1500. The options are limitless, and without a set budget, picking parts is nearly impossible because you can get into so many variations.

tiger has bare bones kits for $300.00, you just need monitor, mouse and key board....I think the two 3.+ gig chip PC's I have ran me under $500.00, I think latest WIN 7 was under $100.00 each for both PC's....

For any kind of gaming or upgraded pc this probably wouldnt be the best idea. Alot of the off the shelf desktops, HP, Dell, ETC have very very limited room to work inside the case. this makes fitting in a larger video card, or better cooling options very hard. Many of them also use power supplies that arent the standard size, making upgrading the power supply very hard if not impossible. Not to mention limited ram slots to upgrade memory.

Best bet is to build your own, i usually dont go for the barebones deals because i like to pick out my case.

Like others have said we really need a ballpark budget to help, you could make a decent budget gaming system for $1000, or something much better for $4000.

My only real useful advice;

OVERBUILD, you may pay a little more for it now, but in a couple years when you wont have to upgrade again you'll thank yourself.

I would like to keep it around $1500 just for the box. Monitors and any external devices I am already setup in that department.

So from what I have been able to think up so a good case thats expandable with a good power supply. From what I remember when I used to build my own allot of the off the shelf units had smaller power supplies.

So a good video card and I have heard the good ones have on board ram thats upgradable?

Then the main board. I use to use ASUS boards and AMD chips but that was a few years back--don't know whats good these days.

Not looking for anything bling bling but of course the best bang for my buck.

I've built a couple PCs lately and used ASUS boards in both. I'm no expert when it comes to hardware and the ASUS boards make things fairly foolproof. I can't remember what video cards I used exactly but they had 2GB of on-board memory and cost about $350 each. I built both for around $1000 each when all was said and done. I would recommend using a solid state drive to install your OS on and a secondary mechanical drive to save your files on. The SSD really speeds things up.

A CPU cooler generally is not needed unless you overclock, but the added security and reduced noise are well worth the $30 in my eyes. A case is very subjective, but I went with something in the middle of the road: not too expensive, and not too restrictive. Optical drive is a BluRay/DVD read/write. Power supply is overkill, but necessary for expansion (for instance if in the future you add a second video card).

No OS included in the price. Again, subjective, and easy to get your hands on.
