Do you want to stay brushed or go brushless? There are a lot of options out there for both. Personally, I prefer to run Holmes Hobbies stuff. Awesome products, awesome support, and he supports and spends a lot of time answering electronics tech questions on this forum.

Price point also. Quality Brushless is $$$. Quality brushed HW1080, Holmes servo and Motor, $200.00

Hang up and Drive

Yes sir. And with the 2 speed he could get a great brushed set up and still have plenty of speed.

O ok thanks, I just want to purchase one for a back up. But the 200 is way to much for me.

My Ascender runs perfect on the HobbyWing 1080 ESC ($40) and the Holmes Trailmaster Sport 550 21t ($20) and a DS3218 Servo ($20) with a FlySky GT3C radio ($55) controlling it all - that comes to $135.

Sure, my Bomber will use a more expensive servo - but that's because it's heavier, faster, and has huge 2.2" tires compared to the Ascender...

See this thread for more cheap servo options:

What the newest cheap servo hotness?

I would add something, but these guys already gave you a good rundown. Start with the budget, go from there. TrailMaster Sport 550 is quite popular for the traxxas. TorqueMaster 550 drives even better, but higher cost.

A budget brushless option is the Sidewinder 4 and Revolver 540. I'm currently out of 1800kv but the 1400kv drives great on 3s. Maybe some other stores still have stock of the 1800.
