I managed to get some tubing bent tonight. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get the upper half of the passenger area tacked together.

twisted, to make the fenders "flatties" just remove the lip that hangs down on the front and clean things up. I don't have pictures of my other Jeep with trimmed fronts.

But yeah, back during the Scorpion build I HAD to label the left/right parts because they were made to fit the frame.
well if the truck is symetrical (sp?) does it matter what side the parts go on?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you've never built a tube frame.

I bend EVERYTHING by hand, no jig. When I make one side I make the other at the same time.
For me, this works well. I can bend two pieces and have them come out nearly exactly the same. You won't be able to tell the difference between the two pieces when I'm done making them.

Regardless, I can tell the difference. So when I make body panels I make them to be an exact fit for the area in which they belong. I don't like having a gap between the body panels and tubing, so the same part between the left and right side might be a hair different to compensate for the slight differences between the two sides.

Most people call it "Anal Rentative"...the ARMY calls it "Attention to Detail"

i race dirt oval and i make alot of rc bodies out of lexan. when i make a new design i do just what you do,all by hand. when the design gets to where i like it i make a template.i never drill the holes in the templates. each body i make i hand fit them so no two are the same as far as holes go. i do this because when i cut out the lexan even though i made a template, things never come out 100% so a little "hand fitting" is needed.

im also an artist so i to can under stand the "Anal Rentative".

sorry to hijak the thread.

"rentative" isn't even a word. So how's that for anal "rentativity"? Dang attention to detail disorder.

Got some tube work done tonight.

So far I've only got nine or so pieces together and I've used ~ 60" of tubing.

Anyway, here's some pics.

Used 3 seats for mock-up. Will end up making a rear seat.

Looks great! I see that you sometimes use tape to hold pieces in place? Not that I've ever done that...

Tape? No...I tack things in place with a mig then braze.

The discoloration on the tubing is from the heat of the MAPP torch. ;)

Huh.... That clean spot on the two lower bars look just like you had tape there holding them for some reason. I should know... In a hurry (when I was working on my first tuber) I used electrical tape to hold some bars together while I attempted to braze it. Needless to say, the tape lasted about 2 seconds... Doh!

Nope, no tape. I learned that lesson when I built Jr. Had everything in place, forgot about the tape...instant mess.

Mig is much easier to tack things in place and brazing gives a decent look that requires minimal cleanup with a Dremel.

Just finished up a bit of work on the passenger's side rear wheelwell.

This was a complete PITA. Bending tube for such small radii is a pain.

The joints still need a good bit of cleaning up, but that'll come later.

how did ya bend that small radius ?did ya heat up the tubing and conform it around some small object ?

off subject question too. when you painted your aluminum servo mount, what type of paint did ya use ? i ask becasue i remember painting aluminum once and it flaked off.
thanks.

twisted,

For the servo mount I scuffed the aluminum then used a bare metal primer prior to applying the Krylon flat black.

As far as how I'm bending the tubing, I'm just doing it by hand using what you see here...

I bend the tubing (3/16" brake tubing) over various parts of the 6" bench vise you see there. Pretty basic, really. No heat.

I do end up giving short sections of tubing a tap or two with the hammer to convince them to do what I want.

Then I fishmouth the tubing, tack everything with the mig, braze the joint and move on to the next piece.

Initially I was going to draw up the chassis on posterboard then build. Decided not to...I'm just wingin' it...designing as I go.

Keep your fingers crossed.

Here's a couple of mock-up pics. The nose of the chassis is canted up a hair too much, but you get the idea.

10.25" wheelbase is the plan.
