Default Ride Height ???

I searched and read that a lower center of gravity is best but why other than the crawler has less of a chance of rolling over?

Am I pretty low centered?.....I find myself getting caught on rocks in the center where wheels just spin and I'm like a seesaw.

To get back high centered, do I just change the lower links to shorter ones or do I do both upper and lower links to short ones?......But wouldn't that also create a shorter wheel base?

You are very low, reminds me of a rock bouncer. To decrease the hangups you need to use lower shock mounts or longer shocks or bigger tires. The links will only change the wheelbase, which does affect the break over angle.

So I moved the shocks to a lower mount, that helped with center clearance however I ended up with crazy torque twist as to where I was before lower centered and had no torque twist

From what I have learned on these forums their seem to be several ways to deal with torque twist.

From what I have read the easiest way is to change to stiffer springs.
Also Mabey use heavier oil in the shocks.
Shock alignment can play a factor the more vertical you can get the shock the better (basically makes it a harder to compress)
Finally their is link angle adjusting the links for more anti squat can help counter torque twist.

I should note that I have no personal experience with shaftys I speak purely from knowledge gained on these forums.

ideally your suspension travel should be near abouts 60/40

^ that's 60% compression (down travel) and 40% rebound (up travel).

tho' I prefer my crawler's suspension set nearer to 50/50

your first picture looks as tho' the suspension ride setting was too low.
but the follow up picture looks to be too high.

I think that your links should be nearly parallel with each other
tho' at 60/40 they would not be.

heavier shock oil will slow that torque twist motion down...
but then... the chassis may stay flopped over and not rebound
to the correct ride height unless stiffer springs were used.

I prefer lighter rated springs and thinner oil viscosity for crawling.

Different shocks then yours...
but I use 1.8 lb coil springs and 20 wt shock oil.

Now if I were jumping the dang thing off the roof of my house...
then yeah heavier rated springs and thicker shock oil would be more purposeful.

Suspension tuning will depend on how you intend to use your rig.

move the shocks back to where it was and learn to pick better lines.


Torque twist is most effectively counteracted by link geometry. Stiffer oil/springs do nothing

I would say that compression is UP travel and rebound would be down travel.
Other than that I agree. It's called compression as it compresses the shock and rebound as it rebounds to the original length.

With regard to link geometry, the delrin skid plate helps a lot by moving the lower links closer together at the skid. Also, it looks like you are running a longer WB than stock, which may explain why it was sitting so low with the shocks at the higher mounting points. If I'm right, you may need longer shocks to get ride height to where you want. Longer shocks will also give you more travel, which helps with flex and articulation.

I built an R1 with Wraith axles and a longer than stock wheelbase. I used the Gmade 103mm piggybacks, and it's a sweet setup. It crawls very well and it handles speed better than any of my other rigs (save for my short course truck, lol), which included a heavily modded Wraith and a heavily modded SCX10. Here's the thread:

So before I order the Delrin skid plate, I decided to cut the stock plate first and move the links in more.....As for wheel base, I'm experimenting this set up by using shorter upper and lower links in the rear. It pulled the rear in about 3/4".....To raise the center height a bit, I went with a lower rear shock mount and I used 2000 weight diff oil in the shock bodies. This helped out a lot with ride height and also with torque twist....I now have like 2% torque twist and the tuned shocks rebound it back at a level stance.....Flex articulation is good for now.

Default Update

UPDATE

So I noticed that my rear drive shaft angle was a bit bad and it would have taken a beating going over rocks so I corrected it by going back to a bit longer upper rear link.



After correcting the rear shaft angle.
This now puts less stress on the shaft joint and won't get beat up crawling over rocks.
