Turning my WK/CK into a trail truck

Since my Ridgecrest is performing the way I want I'm slowly turning my Wheely King (now with CK conversion kit) into a trail truck/ scaler/ light crawler. I'm going to do a 4 link setup soon, have shorter shocks on order, and I'm painting up an HPI Bronco body. Already did the axle mount servo conversion- definitely needs a much stronger servo and a BEC. It's fine for time being. Right now I'm using a Traxxas XL5 ESC since it's waterproof and I'm snow bashing it while I'm waiting for the parts to arrive (and find time to work on it). Once I decide it's a dedicated trail vehicle I'll probably put the stock ESC back in and program in the brake. I'll also re-install the stock 27T motor (using a 20T now) and re-gear it to slow it down and gain torque. It's a fun vehicle and I'm learning quite a bit. I'll post pictures once I get the body finished. Eventually I'll get some 1.9 wheels and tires to finish off the scale look.

Here's a few so far. Right now I'm in the process of making links for the front uppers, got the rear uppers installed- using East End Machining 4 link brakcets. I'm waiting for a different front servo axle mount because the one from CKRC hits the battery tray (still does this with the tall stock WK shocks- I'm using shorter ones now). If that doesn't work out I may have to use the goofy stock steering setup and make links for that. Stronger servo is on order. I'm also going to have to come up with a way to lock the rear steering or go with 4 wheel steering (or get straight axle lockers- haven't decided yet). I'll see if the LHS has any opened 1.9 wheels and tires I can mount in the store and see how that looks. I have the original 2.2 wheels/ tires from my Ridgecrest, but those are still a little tall.

1.9s would look too small IMO, I would recommend a 2.2 around the same size as proline flat irons.

I think some big 1.9s would look good 4.75" or 4.8" boggers or Mtr's. Same size as the flat irons.

The problem for me is the width of the axles. If you don't mind them sticking out past your fenders then go for it. I just prefer a 1.9 to tuck into the fender. Just a matter of opinion

Did a little more work on the truck today. Made a temporary 'permanent' cheap solution for locking the rear steering. Had some bent rod ends from my Ridgecrest lying around in the parts box so I drilled and tapped those. Seems pretty solid.




I also threw on the stock tires/wheels from my Ridgecrest just for giggles.




I should get the other front axle servo mount this week. Hopefully that won't interfere with the front 4 link bracket. I want to tear up the snow!

Yeah same reason I am running 2.2's on mine, just wanted to post other options.

Installed the other axle servo mount from Level-3 and put on the front 4 link plate- plenty of room. I also swapped out the shorter 100mm shocks (the ones Anthonyjlc recommended from ebay) with ones from an AX10 and those work well too. Just a touch shorter than the stocks shocks but the springs are so much better. I may put the 100mm ones back on later. Servo reverser is on order and once that arrives I'll start messing around with 4 wheel steering.

Yeah, I'm right near the AV/Burnsville/Lakeville border. I usually do the snow bashing bit at work during lunch break, as I have access to compressed air and a heated garage to dry off the rig.

Thanks for the comments! I Appreciate that. Got the Level 3 RC servo plate installed and did the front upper links. Absolutely no torque twist at all with the 4 link setup. I also put on AX10 shocks and springs (117mm), but I may go back to the 110mm shocks to lower the CG. I also put back on the stock tires/wheels as they do a bit better in the snow. It also rolls over less with the wider tires. I'm on night shift this week but next week I'm on days so I'll try and get some video uploaded to Youtube (my channel is under roadrascal). Definitely having fun with this rig.

I think you will be very satisfied with these! From my experience, over 4 months since i install them,they deserve to be called bulletproof!!!

Got up early and went to work. The new parts seem pretty stout. Once I get a different steering servo with a longer aluminum horn I should have a better turning radius.
