I ordered Jato rod ends as suggested. And the drag link was on the wrong side of the axle. I was just an idiot when installing it.

I can't tell you how many times I've installed something incorrectly... especially on a crawler.

Two questions.

1. The universals have a lot of in and out play. What shims can I get to fix that?

2. Should the rear C-hubs be clocked for maximum caster like the front or should the be set to neutral?

Here's something I've never run into. Robinson spur and pinion. The grub screw for the pinion is in the way and the spur runs into it. It's close enough where the spur will pass it, but not cleanly. I can't move the pinion back any farther and flipping the pinion puts it directly in the way of the spur.

Here are the three options I can think of.
1. Put washers between the motor and motor plate.
2. Shorten the grub screw.
3. Make the flat spot on the motor shaft longer so I can push the pinion farther onto the shaft. I'm not fond of this option.

Any other suggestions?

Your option 1 or try another brand pinion.

Shorten the pinion so it sits on the shaft deeper or file the tip of the grub screw. I've done both without issue.

Edit: maybe you should add robinson to your shit companies list with vp.

I was going to run a larger pinion, that looks like either using a different pinion, or a larger pinion would clear that issue up.

That pinion looks a bit small for the punishment that it's going to be put through.

That's what I chose - washers between the motor and motor plate. I just hope the motor stays put.

Shortening the pinion wouldn't help. The grub is at the back of the flat spot on the motor shaft. The pinion isn't bottoming out on the motor. Shortening the grub might work, but I didn't want to deal with filing, dropping, filing and dropping a grub tonight.

Ha. My first ever issue with Robinson. Definitely not shit list worthy.

This is the gearing I have in my SMT10 with a 3900kV motor. I'm going to start with this and it should be in the ball park for the speed that I want.

I got the truck together and we have four wheel steering. Now I just have to wait for the snow to try it out.

The real fix is to dump that heavy piece of crap slipper/spur setup. I bought one when it was the "in" thing to run and learned to dislike it due to weight. Grab a traxxas slash slipper and slap it on there in place of the Robinson unit and use a lightweight spur that's spaced out from the motor. I've since dumped the Robinson unit in favor of another stock slash unit.

This slipper is available without the shaft and all that. It drops right onto a supershafty input shaft.

It came with the truck so I'm going to run it. But you're right. The fugger is heavy. I might switch to a normal slipper at some point so thanks for the link.

Slipper clutches are overrated. I never eliminate them, but I lock the nut down as tight as it will go.

I agree that slippers are overrated for sure. But the traxxas unit won't slip when cranked down and it let's you run cheap spur gears in a favorable location compared to the other options.

So the traxxas slipper unit won't fit on the stock axial input shaft?

Option 3, I have done that to several motors. Tape off the motor end plate and hit the shaft with a dremel. It doesn't need to be perfect, just kinda flat is plenty for the grub screw to bite on and stay put.

It fits the old top shaft meant for the single disk slipper clutch if you drill out the drive pin hole from 1.5mm to 2mm.

I have one I filed to fit the stock slipper shaft. The pin slot is too deep in the traxxas unit so when you install the slipper it locks up against the motor plate unless clearanced. On a supershafty input not only is the pin 2mm but it's a few mm further out on the shaft.

Did you use the Slash 4x4 slipper clutch?

I used the Jato slipper assembly on one of my trucks and it clears the motor plate with the Axial top shaft. Maybe that rear slipper plate offset is a little different between the trucks.

Maybe? Both slippers look the same but the supershafty top shaft is made to run that silly robinson slipper so it's builtdifferent than the stock shaft.
