| Operation Achtung!!
Sprechen Sie Portal? Ooohh.... Portals!! That's what I thought when I saw 3racings new knuckles for the AX-10, so I had to have a set. When they arrived, I was bummed to find out that they made my track width way to wide. As sad as I was, I knew there was a way to make them work. After doing some measuring, I came up with a new plan. I would hack off the ears and TIG on some new ones to fit the MRC axles. But after talking to a friend of mine, he strongly advised against it due to warpage. Damn, strike two. Well, not giving up, I thought about it and figured that I would use what I had and after dinking around for an hour or so, I realized that I could use what was in front of me. Here's what I came up with: First things first, I realized that the MRC knuckle just happened to be the same height as the inside of the AX-10 ears so I cut off the steer arms and took off quite a bit of material from the outer face of the knuckle in order to get the kingpin holes to line up with the 3racing knuckles. Here's what I ended up with: Next, I cut the MRC stubshaft to the appropriate length utilizing the stock pin hole for the top gear. Just so happens that the length with the MRC bearing is the same length so I installed it into what's left of the MRC knuckle and then into the 3racing knuckle. Install the pin and gear Then, install the cover and output stub. Make sure you drill out the MRC axle C's to accomodate an M3 screw (kingpin). I used a M2.5 drill and the M3 screws just self tapped but if you are using aluminum knuckles, you will havev to drill and tap them for the M3 hardware. Now you can install it onto the MRC C's using both the flanged sleeves for the MRC knuckles (inside) and the flanged sleeves for the AX-10 (outside) using M3x10 button heads. Her they are with CVD's and a nice coat of O.D. green. Almost look like the real deal! Track width is perfect at 7.75" for the Tamiya Mog body! (The tires are just for mock up. I will be using RC4WD's 1.9 versaion of these) I have not been this excited about a project in quite awhile. Stay tuned for more updates!! |

Dean, you never cease to amaze me with the creativity you have in R/C. What a great idea and a great start to a Unimog project. I am sure I will be glued to this build as I always am with your stuff. I will try and learn what I can so I can maybe implement some of your great ideas into one of my trucks. |

I sure hope these hold up to your trigger finger . Very cool project....at least someone is still modifying parts to make them work for their own rig. Too many off the shelf parts these days......

Thanks all for the comments! Can't wait to put somescratches on it. Quote:
I see no PM.:? Quote:
I too feel that most of the scale builds are a bit too cookie cutter. This will be a fun (but long) build. In the end, it will resemble our fearless leader's (Badger) molester mobile. Quote:
I will try them for sure but the tires weigh 10 oz each. Not sure if the tiny CVD's will last long. | |||

There is a good chance this will be the coolest mog of all time. Do work son! Right now my favorite is the one Mr.Gerrish last built.
