Default Guidance

Hi all. Longtime lurker, first time poster.

I'm really itching to start a Superclass build and have been looking at a lot of the builds here, but they seem to start in 2010 or 2011. If you were going to start a build TODAY, where would you begin? Chassis to electronics.

I'm not building it for competition, just for fun, but I want it to work! Make people think, "How the heck can it do that?", like I did when I started watching some of your videos. I'd like to get some people around here into crawling.

I'm technically savvy and have access to a lot of tooling. Budget wise, I'd like to keep it under $2k.

Thanks for your recommendations, and for putting up with my future questions!

John

The 65:1 Bully axles are a good choice, but I would recommend checking with Erik DLux about a set of the MT axles he's putting together. That just might be the most cost effective route to take...AND you know Erik will stand behind what he builds. These axles have been discussed here: Dlux - Exceed MT axles

As far as chassis' go there aren't too many choices. If you can find a used YTown Beetlejuice that would be a good place to start (that's what I run). Currently I think there may only be 2 other options for a new setup. Chaotic Crawlers has one and Crawlerkeller has the Super Fly.

Super Fly can be found here: Crawlerkeller proudly presents the new Fly V1 Carbon SuperClass Chassis

As far as electronics go...don't skimp here! Get some high quality servos, ESC's, batteries, BEC's.

Tires and wheels...this area is completely up to you and what you want your rig to look like and be capable of.

As ittybitty has said. The bully axles are a good starting point.

The main thing to look at is how much you want to spend.
Make sure you spend it in the right places the first time.

As for chassis it's a hard one. Depending of you want cf or Delrin.

Get good electric straight up. You will be rewarded with them lasting a while.

Just scored a super chassis from member Lead Lobber! It's in the mail as I type this! Hopefully the US Postal Service from Korea is quick...

Now the spending begins!

Getting closer! Just checked into Illinois at 9 pm. I've figured out a good base list of parts for my first order. Let me know if anything should be changed/upgraded. Bear in mind I am not building this for competition, just fun!

I'm starting with:
Delrin BJ chassis. One piece like the Hall Style chassis.
Delrin cross braces.
4" shocks, unsure of brand.
HPI blast wheels with un-narrowed Losi Super King Pin tires. Another set of wheels, unsure of the brand, with cut n shut Sedona's.
Sven weight holder set up
Super Bully Axles 65:1

I'm going to order:
2 - CC BEC
2 - Holmes BRXL
2 - Brood 35t
2 - 3s lipo batt. (Any recommendations of brands & a decent charger?)
Futaba 4PK
2 - Hitech 7980
2 - Robitronics servo horns

This should give me a good start I'm thinking. And DANG, this is expensive!

Looks good. For a charger you could get the Onyx 230 for doing one battery at a time or the Hitec X4 for up to 4 batts at a time. Hitec x4 is a little expensive though.

I'd jump on Shop for RC Hobby Parts and Upgrades - Digital Servos, Brushless Motors, ESC, LiPo Batteries/Chargers for RC Helicopters, RC Planes, RC Cars, Robots and pick up a few Sky Lipo 800mah 3S 40C packs...or you could go with 4S in the same size pack if you want. As far as chargers go...they're all just about the same technology just wrapped in a different case. I have the Hitec x4 and all 4 screens are the same readout as a cheap charger I bought when I first started crawling. They have some good charger setups on that site as well. Just make sure you get the charger, and it will either have a built in power supply or you will need to make sure you get one with it.

Batteries:

3S - Sky Lipo 800mAh 11.1V 40C Battery for 800mm RC Plane and Blade, Walkera, Esky Co-Axial Helicopters, Trex 250
4S - Sky Lipo 800mAh 14.8V 40C Battery

Chargers:

Thunder AC6 - Thunder AC6 Smart LiPo Balance Charger/Discharger w/ AC Adapter for 1-6 Lipo/ 1-15 Nimh + USB to PC Software

It says those batteries are currently out of stock, but they usually come back in stock pretty quick and from the time you order them it usually only takes 2-3 days to receive the order.

Thanks for the battery and charger info!
Those battery prices are worth the wait to get them back in stock.

Are you thinking 4s might be the way to go with the setup I'm planning?

My pile of parts grows bigger, maybe it's a mess. Just ordered 2 BRXLs and 2 Monstertorque 45t motors from Holmes Hobbies. All that's left will be the batteries and charger. I'm leaning towards 4s Lipos with the 45t motors.
Thanks for the link on the batteries ittybitty. Now just waiting for them to get back in stock! May pick a couple up at my LHS if I EVER get it together, just to make its move.

I'm going to assemble it with the current links, then most likely going to make a carbon frame and get some ti links from Dlux. After that, start the weight trimming.
