Thanks for sharing that Di-Spencer, maxbonv is who originally designed the MIP mod, and is at the for front for designing one off parts for the Hammer.

More photos from yesterdays light brackets.

I worked on trying to protect the top lights from roll over.

Lower light guard/stinger.

Shark fin for adjusting the rear link mounts, up down, forward back.

Overall look of the cage.

Well Poprivet, I'm working through one of those one step forward two steps back moments. I wanted to keep the front shocks under the body and had a real cool mount, to only figure out today that the shocks are in the way of the steering. I didn't see the forest because of the trees. Photos and hopefully a solution later!!!!!

Here is the steering problem I ran into, just got ahead of myself.

This is what I worked out, went with some shorter Traxxas big bores I had in my shock box. Move them to the front of the arms and built new mounts. (I'm sitting here shaking my head, can't believe I didn't catch is sooner. So much for keeping the shocks under the body!

All done, no binding.

Since I needed to open up the body for the shocks, I did some trimming on the fenders (front and rear).

Old shock mount, and new one. Thanks for looking!

Got a few things in the mail for my build today. First thing is a pretty cool product from Rc Bros, scale builders tabs and shock mount tabs. They are all stainless steel. They make mocking up and building a whole lot easier!!

The other thing is the Flat 4 VW engine from Nights Customs. This little guy has great detail.

Thanks for looking.

Well I did like the fenders up front, but I think the shocks look better moved out.
Sometimes two steps back gives you a better view I quess.

I have had those tabs in a shopping cart like 3 times now. I need to go ahead and get some. It's hard for me to not fab everything myself, but a good consistent tab would be very helpful.

And the mini flat four looks sweet! I hope to build the dune buggy with all the nights customs parts. Looks like it's missing a couple push rod tubes though. Are they separate pieces?

I'm thinking right now that I don't like the look with fenders cut either, but the 1.9 tires were hitting them at about 1/2 cycle through the articulation. I may like it better once I finish all the cage and bumper work completed.
As for missing parts on the motor, I fired it up and it seemed to run fine!! All kidding aside, I'm not a 1:1 bug guy so I wouldn't know what was missing, I just like the lines of the bugs for crawlers!! Once I get it detailed maybe you won't notice. Working on the rear bumper engine cage now. May have pics tonight.

The engine is missing a few pushrod tubes, but I believe that is for a reason. If I remember correctly, the Knight engine is designed to slip over a Scorcher trans/motor setup, and there are a few things that get in the way of keeping all the details.

Either way...I like! Keep rollin with it!

Hi Brian, thanks for the info and the reason why it is missing. There will be a little more missing before I'm done. I had to do a little trimming to get it to fit in the opening I have. I guess function over a little scale modifying. By the time I'm done this motor will be scale at about 20'.

A little update on the engine mount and rear bumper.

Disclaimer!!!!! With me not being a 1:1 bug guy I wanted to mount my engine as close to scale as I could. So I did a Baja Bug search to find out how it should look. I found many variations of how people mounted their Baja engines, so I desided to mount it the way it fit best for my build. Remember scale looking at 20'.

Started with a cowl and mount for the four banger.

The rest are photos of the mock up for the engine.

Any comments or suggestions are welcome. Thanks for looking!

Thanks Poprivet, it is coming together, been a fun build. Was your rail a 1:1, any photos? This cage has so many joints, soldering and compound angles to figure out. I think I'm just about done with the cage its self. Everything will show better once it is painted and Bar-B-Qued! Sorry, no photos today.

1:1. nothing fancy, but was lots of fun. I lost it in a big fire a few years ago.

Right now it is 11.5", but I'll revisit that when it is done.

Well I thought it was time to mount up my tires. I'm going with 1.7 tires and wheels. I think???

I started out the day on the drill press cutting some closed cell foam.

Cutting the outer foam for the 2nd stage.

Routed a relief on the inner part of the closed cell foams.

I think the 1.9s are a good fit for the scale of the bug body? Any thoughts?

Still working on engine placement.

Thinking the spare will mount here.

A couple shots of the travel with the MIP shaft mod. You can see how little of the shaft is being used at full extension.

Not bad for steering at full lock.

That is all for today, thanks for looking!

You're one smart cookie my friend.
The foams are genius.

Sweet looking bug. Question on the B5M arms...do you need to do the MIP mod to use them or will stock cvds work also?

The B5M arms are a little longer than stock, so I think you would have trouble keeping the shaft in the out drive. That is the whole idea of the MIP mod is to get all that travel without losing the drive shaft. Good question though.
