|  1.5" Project "Slickrock Samurai" Hey guys, I've been waiting for a while to finally start this build, and last week - I finally pulled the trigger..!!  I've always wanted to build a Sammy, and when the Speedway Pal bodys started showing up on here, I KNEW I had to build one..!Heres where I'm starting....( Yup- the same old list of popular basics..  )  * Bone stock NEW Losi MRC- rtr * SpeedwayPal Samurai body * RC4WD 90mm scale coilovers * Custom made aluminum frame * 1.9" Integy aluminum rims * SDI- Trail drs. ( regular version) * 3Racing winch * more "CUSTOM" things to follow - to be revealed later..!!  So - I drove my New MRC for about 20 minutes, and absolutely LOVED it..!! ( I will be buying another one just to have a "Stock" one in the stable..!! ) but I knew this ones destiny was the sammy, so onto the chopping block it went...From this...  To this...in about 10 minutes....  Then- i started thinking about how ALOT of these Sammy builds are using the VERY popular L-Trail chassis, so i went ahead and bought one, BUT I never really liked the way the shock towers seemed to be too far apart for these short sammy bodys.. SO I decided I wanted to make my own aluminum chassis, basically just copying the L-trail, and shrinking it down a bit..  NOW the shock towers will be in the center of the wheelwells, and the shocks will be straight up and down, ( or even angled slightly inward.. ) Next, I modified the RC4WD coilovers, into single soft spring shocks, which will look right at home after i remove the blue anodizing from them.. heres the modded one on the left, stock on right..  These will look and work ALOT better then the stock MRC shocks..!!  Next up was to carefully cut the new frame rails out on the ban-saw.. ( notice how much shorter the new ones are..)  And here they are mocked up together. Still need to make the lower tranny skid, and make some reinforcement rods, then i can re-install all the mrc parts, and have it a roller again- THEN will come body and wheels.. Stay tuned - MUCH more to come soon..!  |

| LOL - Hey Thanks Guys..! OK - Got an update for ya.., After really thinking about it, I ended up SCRAPPING the aluminum chassis idea ( it would have been WAYYYY Too "flimsy" once built and I'm sure it would have gotten ruined after a few hard rolls..) I'm glad I changed my mind NOW instead of down the road once the truck was all done... I ended up re-measuring the L-Trail chassis I had, and then cut an inch out of the center of it, which gave me the same wb as the aluminum one had and then I re-joined it together with some extra strength super glue gel... Before.... After...  Once that was done, I made up some aluminum outer reinforcement plates, to keep the newly cut chassis together...  I then spent a few hours making all the 4 links fit, and work correctly, and I also had to re-use (for now) the stock MRC shocks.. ( the RC4WD ones were WAYY too tall..) I also removed the steering servo from the axle, and will be making an aluminum frame mount for it.  I then had to literally "shoe-horn" the tranny in.. I actually had to clearance a few spots on the lower gear cover, and grind down some of the outer edges of the lower mounting bolts BUT It fits perfectly now, and works fine..Here it is all re-assembled.. By adding the aluminum inner tranny mount, and outer alum. plates this chassis is SUPER strong now, AND the WB is 100% Perfect for the Sammy body   The balance so far is pretty good too.. granted I still need to add the electronics and battery trays, but they will be mounted low, and it will keep the cg. low too, so hopefully this thing will be pretty flexy, and not be top heavy.  Heres the newly built rolling chassis on the RTI ramp   I won't be able to run it this way once the body's been mounted, BUT this will still be one flexy Samurai..!! More to come soon..! |

| Thanks again guys - I'm glad everyone likes it so far... Heres another small update from today... I started off by figuring out how to make a simple yet trick aluminum servo mount that fits up inside the front frame rails - i ended up coming up with this, and it worked out pretty sweet...  Here it is installed in the frame with the steering servo mounted up, and also visible is the custom aluminum battery mount as well. I've seen alot of these MRC's with the batterys zip tied in place, but I wanted to keep mine removeable because I have like 3 stock batterys to use..( Thats like 5 hours of run time..  ) The battery is simply held in place with long velcro strap. Then I came up with a new tie rod and drag link set-up ( the stock losi ones worked OK, but looked like CRAP to me so away they went)  With the link set-up above I get nearly NO bumpsteer at all, and it now looks 1000% better than the stock tie rod/drag link set-up.. I used solid aluminum rod, and drilled and tapped threads into them , then I just re-used the stock losi rod ends.Here it is below as a complete roller ( again.. ) with ALL the electronics re-installed.. I took it out for a test spin on the rock pile in the backyard , and it worked awesome - I just had to do a little tweaking here and there, but It really worked GREAT This one might be turning into one of my favorites already..!! I can't wait to get to all the "detail" stuff..!!  Below is the next step ( yup- NOW comes the FUN stuff..!!! ) Gotta cut it all out, and then figure out how i want to mount it, then I can begin painting, and "playing" with styrene..!  |
