ok its been a month but i finally managed to get something done on this thing. got the body painted, still need another can of black to finish up the inside of the body but its mostly done. i also sprayed the bumpers black.

i got all the electronics mounted for now. the damn mamba max is too big to fit in the project boxes from radio shack so all the electronics are out in the open. whatever, there's no water around here anyway.

one part im kinda proud of is the headlights. i used light buckets from the axial light bucket kit and a couple of servo posts. cut the headlights out of the scout body and bolted in the working lights. the black screws blend into the grille well enough for me.

i think i might shorten the rear links a little bit.

anyway, on to the pics.

the scout went out on its first wheelin trip today. and i learned/decided a few things.

-the front bumper is junk, it'll be going away very soon.
-it needs more articulation
-it needs bigger tires

having the comp cut rear end and the stretched WB makes it look like a dedicated trail rig, but the tires and articulation don't fit that image. it needs a bigger tire and more suspension travel to look more complete to me. ive got a set of traxxas 4" shocks here that i'll try on it. and i guess ill have to order some different tires, considering 2.2 rok lox reduced to 1.9... should still be about 5" tall im thinking.

the front bumper lasted about 5min before it bent, the ends pushed back into the body. the bumper was a mistake anyway it just happened to look kinda cool. so it will be coming off in favor of something a little smaller and beefier.

here you can see that the drivers side of the bumper has pushed back into the body enough to shove the body off to one side...

so today i started working on a new bumper. the old one bent when the truck fell onto it from more than 16" or so. the new one won't. its made of 3/16" tube sleeved over 1/8" solid rod. and braced with more 1/8" solid. when its done it will have 2 more frame attachment points under the frame with a small skid plate on it. and it will hold a winch, a dummy winch at least, the truck's gonna have a 645mg servo winch under the hood behind the steer servo.

oh and RC3WD's shackles like that one you see hanging on the front bumper, the website says they're "heavy duty steel," bullshit, they're aluminum. mine just melted while i was brazing up the front bumper...

opinions?

ok so tonight i got the front bumper pretty much done, its all solid rod and tube sleeved over solid rod now, and has two more frama attachment points, should hold up pretty well. also got the suspension put back together with the 4" maxx shocks. i like the extra articulation i get out of them, the ride height is a little taller though. i might throw some cut down droop springs inside them the lower the ride heaght a little. we'll see how it works on wednesday when i go out crawlin. pics tomorrow.

Could we get photos of the mounts inside the body. I have been trying to figure out how to mount the buckets in my dingo body and I think you hit on the perfect solution.

BTW, the scout looks great. Nice build

I'm not crazy about big obnoxious stingers, honestly the first bumper was a little too big for my taste, but i like this one. this one will eventually get a dummy winch mounted on it and a skid plate underneath it. like i said earlier, i also threw some 4" shocks on it, i like the amount of travel i get our of them.

Not big on stingers myself but that one actually looks kind of cool. I guess I like the beefiness of it that most stinger just don't have. I think they way you did the bottom supports and winch mount area is what makes it work so well in my mind. Definitely liking the scout body, you just don't see a lot of those unfortunately.

took the scout out to calico basin just west of las vegas ysterday. some of the best red sandstone you'll ever crawl. im pretty happy with its performance so far. the dremeled irons work really well, the 3 link front/4 link rear climbs and articulates great too. i do wanna get some softer springs and maybe change shock oil or pistons. but otherwise im really liking it.
