Use threadlock between the gear and the spool next time to see if it helps.

Make sure those screws are tight, they will break more if they are loose.
1/8 2100kv motor. I have tried tight and extra tight!

I am guessing you could probably find the same bolts on Team KNK, and would also assume they would probably hold up better, provided they carry them.

Can you confirm the tooth count on the pinion?

I to have fallen victim to broken bolts. And only using a 35t brushed motor.

I have a theory that this is due to bolts overtightened, most often by axial on rtr trucks.... does this stand up?
Those tiny screws will be very easy to over tighten and hairline crack before the truck has turned a wheel. Easier to break them in tension rather than with the shear forces invloved is my theory.
The picture below shows just two broken screws, which maybe supports the idea.
I changed to 12.9 strength bolts on building my spools, but was also careful to not go crazy tight, just use loctite.

I have been beating my Kit like nothing else with a brushless 2700kv HH Stubby and have yet to see this issue. Knock on Wood, even still I would suggest if your all having issues a good idea may be to invest in some stronger bolts like Dbx, and as Dbx suggested don't over tighten and use some loctite, although with the heat and friction I would probably use Red Loctite.

Team KNK has 2mm x 8mm socket head cap screws, but they are stainless. Are stainless screw more likely to break?

Yes, alloy steel screws are much stronger than stainless.

As a frame of reference, McMaster rates the tensile strength of their 18-8 stainless screws (common RC grade) at 70K psi while the 12.9 alloy steel ones (high strength RC screws) are rated at 170K psi.

No shims. I got two of these and when installing the second one, it was smooth until I inserted the axles into the spool. Could not spin by hand with them installed. I did not notice side to side play but am going to revisit it.

If your not able to freely spin the axle, than something is causing binding. Either it issn't properly shimmed, too much grease, tightened something in too tight etc. Either way it has binding. At any rate once you have your second set sorted out and properly spinning let us know how it does

Were you using the e-clip and what kind of driveshaft? On mine, the driveshaft fits tight enough to the outer bearing that the e-clip won't fit nor is needed to keep the pinion in the proper place. I'm going to open mine up this weekend and look at the wear pattern.

No e-clip, just a small shim. Running MIP, pulls the pinion out to eliminate all in and out play.

A very loose gear mesh will feel buttery smooth, but will also strip out very easy. Try and get some shim packs from 3racing and shim the new set. You should shim for minimal gear backlash but still roll freely. Shim both the pinion and the ring. I know this from 1/8 buggies, loose gear mesh = stripped ring&pinion.

I wouldn't know about the after market parts, but the stock axial gears in my kit did not require shimming. These hypoid gears are a different animal to straight cut bevels normally used. The axial kit seems pretty well made - has anybody actually worn them out or broken them?

I have yet to break any of the small bolts that hold the ring gear to the spool. Even when the axles were in my 9 lb 2.2 truck running brushless on 4s. When I got in a bind I didn't try to power through either. Bolts that small are most likely very sensitive to being over tightened.
