Default Wraith gearing recommendations

What is a good pinion/ spur combination for crawling? The stock RTR setup is crap for crawling. When you get to the larger rocks, the truck tends to load up then launch itself over the rocks (if that makes sense). I realise it's setup as a rock racer from factory, but I have no real interest in the racing side of it. It's just for a scaler/ crawler.

I already have an AX10 (the older kit version) and it seems fine. I'm concidering the same pinion/ spur for the Wraith, but I'm uncertain it's exactly what I'm after as the Wraith has larger tyres. I don't want to go purchasing multiple gear options, but I also don't want to risk a ratio that is too high/low. Plus changing motors and gears in the Wraith is a PITA!!
I need a gear combo that has plenty of torque and low speed drivability, but still has a bit of punch when you hit the power. Keep in mind my truck is dead standard, and I'm still stuck with 3600mah Nimh stick packs

One other quick question, is it normal for a RTR Wraith to be faster in reverse? The Wraith was 'almost new' when I bought it, so I don't know how it was treated before I got it. Hopefully someone can shed some light on it.

Damn, 36 pages. I read the first 2 pages, it's about different motors and ESC's.
Anyone got any advice on just gears for a completely stock Wraith RTR? Advice that isn't 36 pages and takes less than 2 years to read

It comes with 20/80 and that's too high.. It cooks the stock 20 turn motor.. Id o with an 87 tooth spur and an 18 tooth pinion if you want o save the stock motor a bit.
But best cheap option is a Traxxas 21 Turn Emaxx motor, 32 pitch gears 13/60 is what I'm using.. Add a BEC and run 3S lipos.. Its a completely different animal now.. the Traxxas motor runs almost cold on this gearing on 3S..

yep, agree. 87 spur and 18 pinion. great for totally stock electronics and can still get the wheels spinning quick if you need to. for you other issue, flip your diff centers. production error. PM me if you want more backgrond info or instructions

My son has the titan 21T and 22p 80s but he is 5 and wants more speed.

The titan is great. For crawling I would go 18p and 87s

So, for instance- if you went with the 87/18 and 3s. then later changed the motor out to, say, a Tekin pro4 3300- would that gearing still work out?

If and when you upgrade to a tekin pro4 I would be upgrading to 32* pitch gearing in the tyranny to.

Will that be low enough for crawling? My AX10 has 87/14, and the tyres are smaller.

Also, What's the deal with the diff flip? I've read that before. Is there any evidence from Axial about it being incorrect, or is it just something that people have assumed due to the difference in speed?

I'd like to know about the diff flip to. I've only hd my wraith for a few weeks, hve only run it once though due to the stripped out C-hubs from the factory.

But some krazy glue on the threads of your chub screws when you put them in and let it sit for a bit. That what I have been doing for a while. To cheap to replace if it is not broken. LOL

I went 16/87 w/ a 55t motor and 5.5" tires...crawls like a spider.

About the diff flip, is there a stamp on the gears to indicate ratio? Or a part number?

What are the stock diff ratios in a Wraith?

My chubs were striped out of the box. Ended up costing me a knuckle. In the first month.

I run a 16/85
crawls well and decent wheel speed for hills and mud.

Could you post a link for a 18t pinion that fits the wraith?

I found an 87t spur but no luck getting a pinion yet.

87/18 is going to good for keeping stock motor?

87/14 is what I use and love it for crawling.
With a stock axial 20turn motor and 3s lipo it will still be plenty fast enough.

Here's a link about flipping your diff gears around. Good read.

Team RCCrawler Tech Tip: Do I really need a reverse rotation motor in my Wraith?

As for gears, I'd recommend 32 pitch for the larger teeth and more engagement. Pick up a 54 or 56 tooth spur gear and then try out a couple different pinion gears until you find a ratio that you like. My pinion gear right now is 9 tooth and 54t spur. Tons of torque but i want a bit more wheel speed so I'll probably go up a tooth or two. Thats on 35t and 2s.

I just changed my diff gears to the 43/13 HD bevel gears and the ring was already on the right side of the pinion.
