The best places i have ever pointed my nose towards the sky are the middle atlantic ocean, and along the west coast of greenland ( northern lights )

Even tho Denmark is a crappy little contry its still hard to avoid light poloution here
Got me a little telescope witch i use with a 700 tvl starlight camera mounted to it. ( hunting that defenite UFO proof in "HD" and no autofocus blur )

PS. it allso do desent films of chute girls doing things in nature witch i can not mention as i am a gentleman
But its hard to safeguard ones,,,, activties against some one with a telescope 2 km avay.

PPS. no i have not recorded those ,,,,, activities, anyways ppl should not do that stuff in the wild

ever since i was young, and started to grasp the concept of space its freaked me out that there literally is no end. just one thing ive never been able to wrap my head around. and along with that logic ive always felt that basically since space is never ending, we are such a miniscule part of it that we basically dont exist. but im also a firm believer that there has to be other planets just like ours out there. theres no way that were the only life sustaning spec floating around in the eternal endlessness of space.

I used to teach astronomy in college and that always seemed to be the thing that people struggled with most....understanding the scale and distances of the objects we were discussing.

That's me in my classes at college. It was hard to grasp distances at first.

Maybe it was the teachers?

The thread title was well chosen.

The ''Powers of ten'' and similar vids like ''The scale of the universe 2'' are excellent tools to overcome this barrier.

Perhaps. But it is really hard to explain something that someone will never experience and can not physically see.

And as much as I pretend to understand it today, there's no way I'm comprehending the distances even remotely accurately.

I should stop living my life a quarter mile at a time.

When we were down in Flagstaff last year, we got to go to the Lowell Observatory (before they started their renovation project) and we got to see Saturn. Totally cool. To be able to say i have seen Saturn and its rings, not in pictures, or TV or anything like that is amazing. The ex's new husband works for Lockheed, and they have something to do with the Hubble. He has given the kids some pretty cool pictures from it. Space is definitely the final frontier, I just hope that once we really start exploring it, we don't do like we have done here on Earth.

My oldest brother has a Ph D. in astrophysics and has worked in Chile, the group he worked with was mapping the stars in a small section of the sky. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same place. I can't imagine the things he has seen, talking to him about it makes my head hurt.
