This is a great example of the US being so spineless, weak and not wanting to hold people accountable for their actions. Absolutely disgusting.

Surprised that come out of Virginia. Sounds like a California story. Coddle the Illegals.

Yeah, because we need to throw the book at non-violent criminals, pack our for-profit prisons even tighter, and put more kids in foster care. Both would cost tax payers a shit ton of money, and it's doubtful it would do anything for society.

Hopefully she'll take this rare opportunity and fix her shit. If not, it's on her, and adios.

Eh, while the lack of consequences probably doesn’t bode well, circumstances surrounding that particular story...it’s understandable. Although, hearing that she wouldn’t accept responsibility kinda means it’s going to happen again. And calling the thief a victim too...please. Nobody made her steal. She(likely) put herself in that situation.

Yeah let's give her an unfair trial where all the evidence wasn't admissible and then let her off easy because the jurors were spineless.

“The general sentiment was she was a victim, too,” said the jury foreman, Jeffery Memmott. How's this POS a victim?

She made $20 off of a felony. Think about that a second. She profited from a felony.

Tax payers are already paying for this POS. She's an illegal, she can't speak English, she's not making enough money to survive, she had her first child at 15 and now she's pregnant with her second child. You know we're paying to help support them.

On top of this she showed no remorse.

Punishment is all about crime deterrent. Giving her $20 after committing a felony isn't punishment.

I think thieves are the lowest scum on Earth and they should be treated as such. On top of it she's an illegal. I'll personally play for her plane ticket back to where she came from.

Compassion and forgiveness... Curse those Christian values.

You want to get riled up about an unpunished crime? How about that cop in AZ that executed that drunk guy in a hotel? That is a shit-ton more egregious than some petty theft case.

I think killers, and child molesters are the lowest scum of the earth...and people that show no compassion for their fellow humans.

I sympathize with her, cause $60 doesn’t buy diddly squat now-a-days. Show me a place where you can support yourself, and 2 children for $60 a day.

What evidence?

Of her own stupidity. Technically true, though it does sound funny.

The profit was not her doing.

Yup, and it's cheaper to keep her out of jail and her kids with her.

Hearsay.

In this case, her punishment was forever being labeled a felon.

Depends on the circumstances. She isn't a crack head or a gang banger, she's a dumb kid who did a stupid thing. Nobody got hurt, and the items were voluntarily returned. There's room for leniency there.

One could say she a victim of severe under payment. $60 is me working for maybe 2-3hrs at most, and that’s without charging for the heavy equipment, even my employees make over $20 a hour.

Most of the world is underpaid.

Laws should be equal for all, regardless of circumstances or emotions.

Most of your questions would have been answered had you read the entire article.

Punishment has to be equal for all otherwise judical system becomes biased.

One guy steals $100 bill, gets caught and awarded a 5 day prison.

Another guy steals $100 bill, gets caught and awarded a 1 day prison.

Is it ^ fair?

Did the one that got less time give back what was taken, I mean if The police have to take the time to catch an unremorseful criminal then ya I want that person/criminal to be punished harder than someone willing to reform.

I had a 04 Yamaha raptor stollen from me last year, and when the police caught the guy red handed with my atv in his stolen black truck they ask me if I wanted to charge the guy, and I said yes for the maximum charge that can le levied, if the guy had brought it back after his joy ride I probably wouldn’t have charge him.

It depends on why they stole.

If one does it out of necessity and the other just because he wanted to, wouldn't it stand to reason that their punishments should be different?

Most civilized societies have legal systems that are somewhat flexible. Not all actions are equal, so not all punishments are universally applicable.

Compassion is weakness when given to those that don't deserve it.

Why do you want to be compassionate with this thief, but not with the cop?

Compassion is weakness. I don't have compassion for those that don't deserve it. She is a thief.

It is not my problem that she's uneducated and has chosen to keep having kids that she can't afford. She is in the poor house because of the decisions she has made.

Quite the opposite. It's super easy to be compassionate towards those that would obviously appreciate it.

Seriously? Can you not differentiate between petty theft and murder?

The opposite? Didn't you just reiterate what I said, but in a different way?

There's obviously a difference. But he was suggesting compassion for one criminal and not the other. Why?

You said it was weak to give compassion to those that didn't deserve it. I said that it was not. Don't confuse compassion with indifference.

Because one was a minimum wage maid that stole a few pieces of jewelry, the other was a person entrusted with the safety of the public at large that unjustly took a life.
