Default Noob Torch question. ..

Can you put Mapp gas on a regular propane torch?

Basically, I already have a household propane torch and just wanna change the gas? Can that be done or are there issues?

Thanks

Definitely issues. For about $15 more than a Mapp gas setup you can get a Oxy/Mapp rig at Home Depot. It has a much more manageable flame than the straight Mapp torches, which are designed for plumbing type work.

Tio, what issues would arise? Is it issues with the usability of the flame or are they saftey issues?

The reason I ask is because I was under the assumption of what bob said. I just don't know the particulars about the regulator designs or if they operate at a similar pressure.

I used to use regular propane with my trigger torch I have for plumbing and switched to map with no issues, you are safe to go....now I have just a acet only set up to do brazing with, now I can put my plumbers torch handle back in my tool box ....i'm not sure what "definite issues" above are switching to mapp from propane, i'd like to know what they might be ....

A quick Google of 'mapp gas in propane torch' yields a number of threads including:

Why can't all propane torch heads be used with MAPP gas? - Yahoo! Answers

It seems that some propane torches will work while others will melt. The most common advice is that it is no ok. Reasons not to include orifice size, the swirl action in Mapp torches, etc. etc.

One thread:

You can use a Mapp head on Propane, but you can't use a Propane only head on Mapp.

I have a Benzo Quickfire, for propane and wanted to use MAPP gas; I e-mailed Benzo and they replied quickly. DO NOT USE MAPP GAS CYLINDER on head only rated for propane.
I don't know one way or the other, but tend to err on the side of caution.

I've not used the Oxy/Mapp rig enough to burn thru a bottle of Oxy, but it is way easier to use for this little stuff than my Mapp only torch.

Like stated above, not all propane heads are rated for Mapp, always check compatibility. Manufactures know there equipment the best, internet has a lot of opinions....

Why do you want to change over to Mapp? Are you having trouble finding propane?

Mapp burns hotter and can be handy for larger dia material or flat stock where the material becomes a large heatsink.

Not sure if that is the OP's reason but it is one of the reasons I use Mapp or oxy acetylene occasionally

I was looking at MAPP because I'm new to brazing and that seems to be almost all people here are using. I read in a few threads that propane did not really get hot enough for the silver people were using. MAPP and propane are 9.99 a bottle and next to each other in Lowes. So I figured if one is better than the other, why not. I just don't have a ton of cash laying around to drop on a torch set. (read I'm a cheap ass)

If I were you I'd buy a single Mapp tank and see if it works or not. Can you post up a pic of the torch nozzle?
