Exclamation Where to get this type of threadlock?

Never seen it mentioned so I'll try here. Does anyone know where to buy the "factory" type threadlock that comes pre-applied to some screws? I remember Traxxas sometimes has it especially on some of their larger m4 screws. It's blue in color and almost looks like it's baked on. And it lasts through quite a few assembly/dis-assemblies. If I can find it, I think it would work really well for wheel nuts.

I've wondered this same thing! Thanks for starting the thread. I've wanted to do the same, but I always forget.

Now just have to find a seller that will ship internationally. Hey Jato, maybe you can buy some extra and sell some to me!

That stuff is red. That worries me. It's definitely not what Traxxas uses.

I found this stuff. I can't find any pictures of the actual substance though.

Hey Jato, the stuff you posted looks more like sealant, not threadlock. As for the Vibratite VC-3, you're right it is red. But I think given the fact that it's marketed as "adjustable, re-usable", my guess is it can probably be dis-assembled. Since you're in the US, why don't you give it a go?

It does look more like sealant, but it will be interesting to see. It came up on my reusable thread lock search.

This also came up. It looks like a commercial-only product.

Here's some threadlock tape I've never tried.

Before I was an electrician, I was a pipe fitter/welder and this stuff is for pipe threads and flange fitting gaskets, probably not what you are looking for...

That's what I was afraid of. Is it like a pipe dope?

I use vibra-tite VC-3 in a lot of industrial applications. Despite being red it has the thread locking capabilities of about Loctite 242/blue. It is a pain in that you have to paint the fasteners and let dry prior to assembly. It's also "gummy" compared to most thread lockers and never really fully hardens. It does work EXTREMELY well in high vibration, oily environments so I'm sure it'll work just fine for tiny trucks.

I haven't personally experimented with it on the RC scale yet, mostly because VC-3 has a definite shelf life after the bottle is open. We typically order the 30ml bottles and you're lucky to have the cap off for a total of 20 minutes before it's unusable.

I've looked before and tried to figure out what it is that's applied to the bolts with these patches. I'm thinking it's some kind of nylon that's applied in a heated/liquid form and allowed to dry. You can purchase these fasteners from McMaster if you really want some.

I bought some, but haven't used it.

I don't like that it's tacky. I wish it dried like the stuff that came on Traxxas vehicles, etc.

It's not really tacky per say, stuff won't stick to it after it's "dry". Mostly it's just soft.

The main reason for this and 100% of the reason I use it is, you can't check a set screw or a fastener for torque if you use a thread locker that hardens. Something like Loctite 242 will "break" if you try to torque it and won't effectively prevent the fastener from loosening. Threads and set screw tips deform under use and do need occasional checking when in service. VC-3 allows you to check fastener torque without having to fully remove the fastener, clean, and re-install it.

FWIW, you probably couldn't convince me to use VC-3 on m3 set screws. Everything else it should be great for.

I use these sticks and love them. Stuff is thick and I just drag a screw across it before installing. No worrying about making a mess.

Is it anything like the Tamiya thread lock gel?

I've been using the Loctite twist gel without issues, but I've wondered about those blue patches myself. Something is different about that concoction because sometimes those screws can be a real pain to get off once you hit it.

I've been using this for several years, great stuff but sometimes still use liquid Blue Loctite, depends on what I'm doing. Good and bad thing is the chapstick version does not wick into areas where you don't want it, this is why I still sometimes use the liquid when I want it to wick into all the crevices.

Yes, and wow that's way more than I ever use on a screw, just a dab'll do ya!
