Default How to convert Ascender trans to a Two Speed

Here is the list of parts required to convert your Ascender transmission to a 2 Speed and a link to the instruction manual below.
Note that you will need a "Mini" servo to operate the shifting, at least a 3 channel receiver and a transmitter with a 3rd channel/button with "2 position switch"

Parts needed:
VTR332009 Transmission Metal Gear Set: Twin Hammers
OR
VTR332000 Transmission Molded Gear Set: Twin Hammers

VTR232008 High- & Low-Speed Gear Set: Twin Hammers (Top shaft gears)
VTR232009 Transmission Shift Fork & Shaft: Twin Hammers
VTR232007 Transmission Shift Linkage Set: Twin Hammers (the picture is old on our site, the current parts should have a spring and 2 piece arm that acts as a servo saver)
VTR232017 Transmission Shaft Set: Twin Hammers (sorry guy, you only need the small aluminum spacer and we only offer it in this set)
VTR237003 4mm x 8mm x 3mm Ball Bearing x 1 (You'll need 2 bearings)
VTR237004 5mm x 10mm x 4mm Ball Bearing x 2 (you'll need 4 bearings)
VTR236131 E-Clip 3mm x 1 (You'll need 2 e clips)
VTR236013 M2.5 Nylock Nut x 1 (You'll need 1 Nut)
VTR235108 M3 x 12mm Button Head Screw x 1 (You'll need 2 screws)
LOSA6356 5&6mm Shim set 5x7x.02mm shim x 1 This is the only way we sell the shims by themselves.

Link to Twin Hammers Kit Instruction manual

You will use the following steps:
A-2 thru A-6 (Disregard the outer standoff mount in A-6)
A-12 and A-13

One tip is to make sure the shifting shaft that slides in and out of the transmission case has a smooth finish to it. For the most part, our production parts have a smooth finish but I've seen some with a slightly rougher texture and this can cause the shaft to stick in the transmission case, making it harder to shift. I always polish it to make sure it's smooth.

As far as I can tell you also need 4 5x10x4 bearings for the extra gears on the lower shaft, 2 4x8 bearings for the extra gear on the middle shaft, and maybe a couple e-clips for the shift fork.

Would an entire twin hammers transmission contain all these parts? I have a spare sitting on the shelf.

Yes all the internal parts will drop right into the Ascender trans case.

A standard servo will not fit but I have seen others modifying it to work. Check the Twin Hammers forum and you should be able to find the info you need.

Will these parts be offered in a kit any time soon? Mainly thinking about new drivers/builders possibly getting into their first kit and not so savvy with cross referencing parts from other trucks.

There will not be one anytime soon. I'm looking for a feel of the market. The users here tend to have more experience and are savy enough to either piece the parts together or take advantage of a kit BUT that being said it's outside this market space that I have to figure what the demand would be like.

Thanks,
Rich

Hey rich I know this is off subject but im trying to find out the length of the ascender shocks from eye to eye?? I plan to get a kit as soon as im able but am considering these shocks for my 2 scx10s that I currently own being I have read a few comments stating how smootn these stock shocks are..currently I have my stock plastic scx shocks setup at 95mmmeye to eye via longer rod ends..also are there softer springs available?? And what springs come stock soft medium or hard.

Bah, this needs to be put together as a kit. Or, just offered straight up in the kit. I love my 2-speed in my TF2, and someday, hope to love it in my Ascender.....

Interesting. I have a mini Futaba S3016 in my Twin Hammers (same two speed) and didn't have any issues setting the EPA's. Its still kicking even without a servo saver. Does your radio have a 2 position 3rd channel, or 3 position?

Whats a rough idea of the cost of all the parts required to do the 2 speed conversion, minus the servo?

Is the shift fork supposed to come with c-clips or do those come separate as well? I was all excited as I finally had all the parts this thread said I needed, but the shift fork bag only had the rod and fork in it.... no c-clips. Where can I get those? Or what size are they? There is also no vtr236013 m2.5 nut for the shifter in the parts listed.

Yup, just got done doing the same. :( Had to tear apart a perfectly good Slash shock for the e-clips. Where did you get a m2.5 nut for the shift rod?
