Not sure of the exact temps, but the map gas got plenty hot. A little to hot for me. I found myself burning off my flux before the joint was good. And it seemed like the acual size of the flame spread the heat to far when I was joining a new tube to a preexisting joint.

It was worth the extra cash for the little torch to be able to pinpoint the heat. I can somewhat push the solder around with it.

That being said, I already had the torch kit. A set of bottles and torch set ain't cheap. With more patience than I have, the map gas set up would definitely get the job done for around $80 bucks vs. The 2-300 initial cost of an oxy/acetylene set up.

To hold the cage while I braze I use neodymium magnets from home depot on a piece of steel tubing. A piece of anything flat and magnetic would work though. Just make sure not to get the magnets too hot or they stop being magnets

To hold the pieces in place while I braze them I use whatever I can. Mainly some assorted springs from tractor supply, and some bailing wire. The wire can be wrapped around and twisted tight then just cut off when your done.
Nice job Poprivet, on your rig and showing new guys how to do it!!
I know you have done some nice tube work on some of your cages, but for your first tuber you are doing a really nice job. Are you still using your rod bender to bend the tube, or did you put something else together?
Anyway, looking forward to following along on this one.

Thank you CODYBOY.

I did add this to the rod benders bracket. Using the opposite side of the backstop. I got the idea from abother member, but can't Remer who.
It's a 1/2" bolt, 2 washers, 2 nuts, and whatever you can find for a spacer. The spacer needs to be the same thickness as the tubing your bending.
I just loosen the top nut to slide in the tube, and barely finger tight it down. I put marks on the bracket for duplicating bends.

Completely unrelated, but Rccrawler just sent me an email wishing me a happy birthday. How cool is that?! This is a great forum.

I knew you would figure out how to make your bender work with the tubing. It is amazing how good the washers a spacer keep the tubing from kinking. I just set mine finger tight too. Good job!!!! And thanks for taking the photo.

This is some good info for a first timer maybe thinking about doing some brazing work. The photos of the products that you use help to know what to buy. The file for notching the tubing is a good idea. Will be following the rest of your build.

I'm real glad to hear it. What is the point of a build thread, if not to let someone see how you built that.

Or in this case "rebuilt that".
I can't leave well enough alone.

I know it's out of proportion to the 1:1in a few ways (Loosely based). I'm still learning how to scale down. So in an attempt to get it looking more like the real one I'm changing some things.
2 steps forward / 3 steps back. Lol

I would really like more pictures of the 1:1. If someone can find a good side shot, I'd love to see it.

Some of my builds resembles that remark!

Sometimes you just have to make it your own.

Made a little progress over the weekend. The rear has been reworked, and is still not finished. I shortened everything out back a little.
The front got a new stinger, and moved the lower mounting points back to put more of a rake forward.
Also got a big portion of the bracing finished.

I also have to say that the magnets and tubing I'm using to hold the cage in place for brazing works very well.

More bracing. I definitely understand why those guys get sooo much for a tube chassis. This is tedious time consuming work.

And just to satisfy my curiosity. I just sat all the electronics in to see where it was at for weight. I still have more bracing and body panels.
There are no u4rc tracks anywhere near me,(until I build one) but I had intended on this rig to be 1.9 trophy class legal. The rules say "minimum of 7 lb." I'm not sure I'm gonna make it.

Anyone know why there is a 7 lb. minimum?

Looks good, you made some great progress this weekend. What are you using for your tubing? I use all SS, so magnets won't work for me. How do you like your new torch?

I suppose I might have another pound with the rest of the braces, panels, and a couple scale accessories. We'll see.

Thank you.
It's all 3/16" brake line, and I love love love this torch!
How do you like working with the stainless? Stronger I'm sure.
I considered ss, and dom, but decided I'd better do my learning on the cheap stuff.

Well, thanks Bud it is kind of like therapy for me.
If you haven't checked it out, I just started a new build in the Twin Hammer section. "Herbie The Thug Bug" Baja Style. This one is going to be fun, and I'm kind of stepping out of the box a little.

Hey,

I just signed up for this forum to say your build looks awesome and ask a couple questions. I'm still new to crawlers, could you humour me and list the parts you used in this picture? I'd love to do a build like this, I'm wondering what the motor trays from? Or is it something you made up?

Thanks
Mark
