Default Poprivet's first full tuber named U.N.C.L.E.

The name and the rig come from the movie- the man from U.N.C.L.E.
If you haven't seen it, you should. It's pretty good, and towards the end you get to see this.

I actually started with the axles and drive train a few months ago, but was stuck with builders block on what exactly I wanted it to look like.

After staring at it for a couple months I decided this rig looked to sweet to not build. So I orderd up some parts, and slowly got busy.

And so the start of the chassis was a little rocky to say the least. I'm not much on creative design, and I'm very indecisive.

I actually waited to start this thread until I had fab'd to much to turn back. Now I have started the thread to maybe motivate myself to keep moving forward.

So...here we go

1/8" x 1/2" steel

Cage work. All 3/16" brake line. Brazed with 56% and my new smith little torch. (I love this little torch).

Thinking of running the spawn interior, and will have to wait and see what size lipo I can fit somewhere.

More cage work. Had a hard time finding pics of the 1:1. Especially the rear. So I played with a couple different ideas. I'm still not 100% on how to finish the back end of the cage.

All I see is a Maisto Rock Crawler photo-bombing this pic.

Its an awesome start. Hopefully I'll get to see it crawl sometime this year.

Lol. That was my son's first crawler back when he was 2.
Now he is 4 and the green deadbolt in the pic is his rig now. He loves it and named it Slimer because he loves ghostbusters.
It's all I can do to keep my tools away from it though.

Thanks for the kind words Mike. I'll make you a great deal on used Maisto.

They feel pretty tuff. And definitely look the part.
I was a little disappointed in the brass tubes though. I know I've read that they fit snug in the housing, but mine will literally just fall out. They are looser than the town get around.
And I don't understand why they don't come threaded. That is honestly the only reason I run tubes. I have never broken an axle housing, but my c-hub screws always strip out.

Yeah stripping the c-hub bolt sucks... That's part of why I have the ssd housings.

Nothing major. I did get the main cage tied together. Now it's time for ALL the braces, and figuring out the upper shock mounts.
The chassis sits a little higher off the skid than I planned, and I'm not completely happy with the rear of the cage, but it don't look to bad.
This is my first full tuber. I'm going at this as a practice run. If it doesn't work out this time. I'll know what I need to do different on the next one.

Maybe add some rear upper link mounts to raise them up a bit?

Actually I am hoping you wont be happy with this one, and decide to build another one. That way I can steal this chassis off of you.

Can you show me what your using to braze with? I'm thinking about trying my hand at it since I can't use a welder anymore due to my defibrillator.

Sure can. In fact, here are the methods to my madness. For some this is old news, but for others. I hope this helps.

Flux and 56% silver solder

Oxy/acetylene

The torch I started with. It worked, but was cumbersome and took to long each time to set the flame.

Then I got this. Really liked the trigger igniter, but to large a flame and still not enough heat control.

Then I got this. Smith little torch. Awesome. I can set the flame with one hand and it's size lets me put the heat right where I want it.

Also I use a chainsaw file (a.k.a. rat tail file) to notch the tubing. You can get them in 3/16" and 1/4" for which ever size tubing your using.
I cut the file in half, and chuck it up in my drill. Then guide it with my finger and thumb.

To hold the cage while I braze I use neodymium magnets from home depot on a piece of steel tubing. A piece of anything flat and magnetic would work though. Just make sure not to get the magnets too hot or they stop being magnets

To hold the pieces in place while I braze them I use whatever I can. Mainly some assorted springs from tractor supply, and some bailing wire. The wire can be wrapped around and twisted tight then just cut off when your done.

Thanks for the information. How much heat are we looking for to do this? I like the yellow torch but you mentioned about flame to big.
