Scorpion Sportsman Build

I just bought my first crawler so let the fun begin. I bought a used AX10 scorpion that is roller form. so im waiting on that to show up to the door in a few days. Their are no comps in the area but want it to be sportsman... Im looking into chassis atm but wont be getting that for a little while. going to get what i have up and running first.

I want to try and get a few things figured out before it arrives. One big question is their a difference between the AX10 Gen1 (scorpion) axles and the AX10 Gen2 (deadbolt) axles or are they the same?

Im not sure what all, if any mods are done to it. it looked pretty stock other the some aluminum links. So i figured the best place to start is by getting it running and have some fun.

Looking for a decent motor and figured a Homes. What one and why would be great.

with that comes a decent esc and bec to go with the Homes motor. I already have a few RX laying around for my planes that i figured would work. i even have a few micro RX's. planed on a micro for less weight and space.


Overdrive and underdrive from what ive read seams to be a must??? what parts / teeth/gear combo do i need if its not all ready done? where to order them from?

I'll jump in here and give you my 2 cents!

Fist thing I would do is get electronics and get it up and running. Holmes BR mini or BRXL are both great esc's or save a few bucks and get castle sidewinder micro or Mamba Micro Pro (basically same esc just one has a heat sync). For motor I would get something in 35 turn that your budget can afford. I'm a Team Brood man but you can't go wrong with either. If you want one stop shopping then go all holmes and pick up one of his trailmaster servos and don't forget a bec! Use the micro rx to save space and weight.

Gen 1 and gen 2 have different axles and chassis'. Gen 1 uses standard scx/ax10 axles where the gen 2 uses ar60 axles. Gen 1 chassis is metal and looks like 2 half moons put together and gen 2 has a complete plastic chassis.

A huge upgrade is the over/underdrive gears for the axles. These will be one of the upgrades you will want sooner than later! Take the transmission out and check inside to make sure all bearing are good and I'd put metal gears in there while it was apart. Next will be drivshafts. They will either need to be upgraded or reinforced in some way. Just read through the build threads here on the first page and you will get a sense of what most are using for a competitive crawler!

And depending on which version your getting look into the XR10 mod if you have the scx/ax10 axles. If you have ar60's then look into getting wraith knuckles to increase steering and you will also want axial cvds for the ar60's!

The BEC voltage has to below what your receiver can handle
You should also start below the voltage of your servo.

Some receivers & servos can only handle 6 volts, some can handle more.
The highest voltage both servo & rx can handle is what you want to set it at.

What servo & rx do you have?

the roller i bought comes with a hitec 625 but im sure ill need to upgrade that before to long

the RX is a mini futaba but i cant remember what one. ill look in a few when i get off work..

Looks like you can go up to 6 volts with your 625 servo

Futaba® Air System Receivers

I would confirm your Futaba can handle 6 volts (some look like 4.8v max)
if 6v ok for your Futaba rx I would set it at 6v to get the most out of your servo.

Most people use the castle 10amp bec.

Yah the CC BEC is what I planed on going with.... I didn't realize their adjustable OK OK. Sweet. I just thought I had to pick a Voltage and I was stuck with it like that. Figured out what castle link is

So is the only difference between the CC and the CC Pro the max voltage?

Correct.....the pro would most likely be used for airplanes/helicopters where more servo's are needed.

Yah figure it would have been also. just saved a little on the motor atm. figured the torque master would be a good started for know but replaced later on. Im pretty sure tires and wheels will be getting replaced as soon as the crawler arrives. I think it has Axial Lizards on it and ive read they suck.

once it arrives ill be checking the gearing, bearing, ball ends and linkages etc... too see what all needs replaced or fixed. Im sure i do some of the quick and easy mods to lower the CG as well. Advice on the over / under drive would be great. for instance what gearing, part numbers, and where to get them. I always see everyone's gears in the little green bag with the skull on it just not sure where they get them...

After that i figure time for gearing for over/under and front axle work such as aluminum parts.

shortly after im sure the chassis, links, and etc... will fallow.

I agree with having the front wheels rotate faster.
How you get there is debatable.
For the most economical approach you can put under gears in the rear and run the stock gears up front.
This allows you to buy 1 set of new gears and end up with a spare set of front gears.
Under gears - AX30402 for the rear as mentioned above.

The stock gears are straight cut and a weaker material than the spiral cut axial upgrade gears.
Buying a set of stock ratio axial gears will make them tougher.
Stock gear ratio upgrade - AX30395

Some like running overs in front and unders in rear, this gives you even more difference between front & rear (maximum spread of ratio's front to rear.)
Over gears - AX30401
Under gears - AX30402

With a 35T brushed you will be fine with the stock gears holding up if you want to go as cheap as you can.
If you can afford 2 sets I would recommend getting the upgrade gears for both axles, smoother running & a bit of extra toughness in the axle gears.

Holmes brushed use .125" (3mm) shafts, so a 5mm bore pinion won't work without a sleeve.

Crap didn't know that. I'll have to see if the lhs has a 3mm pinion or a sleeve.
If not I'll guess I'll be ordering my tires and a few other things sooner then expected.

Well I got my ax10 Scorpion and all looks good. After looking it over real well it seams to be in pretty good shape. It does have the aluminum links and chassis. The gearing is stock and will be getting a upgrade pretty soon along with a front axle battery tray and 4 link upgrade. It does have the crappy tires I feared so to those will go also.

I haven't received my motor and stuff yet but once I do I did however pick up a pinion gear shim at the LHS along with a 3mm 32p 14t and 16t pinon gears just incase.


Do you really need photos of a bone stock ax10...
I'll get some once some upgrades are done

Anybody have a link on wiring up TorqueMaster Expert 540 motor BR mini ESC and Cstle Creations 10 Amp Adjustable BEC?

I've looked and look but can't find that setup. Find a lot of MOA but not shafty single motor with a BR mini and I know I'm not the first to do it.
