Default Pinion Bearing Issues

Lost a rear pinion bearing bashing today after 3 packs and destroyed housing. I bash dirt no water or mud. Bearings were NEW AVID and I put extra grease in them before installing them. Had 14 6S runs on these gears with BHB mod no problems. I think I need to design a boot or something to seal the pinion. It is the lowest point on the truck and gets all dirt from the front drive wheels thrown at it. I don't think this is a gear issue because the rear bearing is gone but the head or front bearing is perfect. Any ideas?

It definitely looks like dirt found its way in there. I check/ replace pinion bearings every 15 runs on 4S. You might need to do a maintenance check after 10 on 6S.

That sucks especially with Avids.

I thought of using a shock or diff boot from a Losi 5, DBXL or one of the 1/5scale trucks but couldn't find measurements of the boots to see if they would slip over the axle housing.

$$ Expensive but lots of spares

5 Piece Heat Shrink Wire Wrap Assortment

That comes with a 1" tubing size and I think that should fit over the housing.

Looking at that option. Also thinking of using a automotive freeze plug backwards. Press fit over nose of housing drill a hole and CL glue some foam to it and use some shock oil in the foam to trap the dirt like a K&N air filter. You can remove the foam when dirty and install a new piece. No drag on the drive shaft.

Heat shrink won't work, tried that already. It will crack, unless you find a way to make some corrugation. And don't forget that, whatever you do, you can' t seal on the rear axle, it will need to rotate around it

So I started brainstorming at work today. The credit for my first design goes to my coworker who came up with it. We get parts all the time with these caps plugging holes and we save em for plugging holes.

That's a great idea! Should help quite a bit for dirt/mud. I'm sure water will still find a way but at least it won't be being forced in there like it was before!

Still have full shaft articulation and being its open in the back if stuff gets in it SHOULD fall out. Plus it cost nothing. Hopefully get some testing this weekend. Don't do water here.

Put it all back together with same gears and still smooth as glass. Guess I got lucky. New housing of course.

Nice work to you and your coworker. Sometimes it is the simple things that actually may work. Look forward to seeing if it holds up.

Nice job! I'm quite curios how well will keep the dust away. I was thinking of even a more waterproof solution by installing a bearing on the shaft and some kind of flexible hose from this bearing to the rear axle. I am still thinking I don't think a shrink tube will work, it's too stiff, especially at this diameter.

Hell of a idea Steve! I did something similar but I like your idea better if it works. I used this.. https://www.amainhobbies.com/align-l...60064b/p207449
It looks like an oversized rubber O ring. I slid the O ring over the drive shaft so that it almost touches the diff housing.
