Or you could do the epoxy coating, then put random rc decals and stickers on the floor, like racing banners on the floor.
Just throwing it out there.

The checkered pattern is definitely what I'm wanting most. I am looking at just under 400 sq ft in the shop. Trying to find the best deal on tiles is the problem.

Depending on where you live, you need to see if there is a discount home repair store of some kind, or even any kind of flooring place. They may have discontinued flooring or special order flooring that nobody ever picked up. If you can find the commercial type peel and stick floor would be the best because it will last alot longer than the cheap stuff.

Just did an epoxy floor in a friend's workshop - came out great! Added some sand for texture - non slip, stain free, and very durable. Highly recommended. Will be doing my shop the same way. I have the peel and stick tiles in my kitchen and wouldn't recommend them unless you plan on grouting. They look nice, but we are constantly fishing crap out of the seams. Not ideal for a work area.

Great "build" so far!

I looked around for hours last night, for the price I think I'll have to do an epoxy coating. Even the good stuff is less than half the cost of even the cheap crap tile. I would have loved a more "showroom" style floor but I think it will have to wait.

Josh I would stay away from the peel and stick down there. Have a feeling you will be battling them from peeling up (moisture). The garage floor epoxy works and looks great. $65-70...be done

Stop with the reasoning! I think the epoxy is just going to win in the end. May just go buy it tonight and get it done. Then it will be done before the benches go up.

That would be the way to do it.....

If you want to get all fancy....you could get two colors and make it checkerboard (this will be a long process) or I have made a large stencil before (Harley symbol for a buddies garage) came out nice.

I think that's what I would do too. The speckled stuff that they use for garage floors would look great, but probably be hard to find things if you dropped them.

I wish I had done my floors before the benches and mill got moved in.

I would also avoid the peel and stick tiles. If the floor isn't perfectly flat there is no point in putting any sort of tile down. You would most likely be tripping over the edges of pulled up field tiles in a year or 2. And if you roll anything like chairs or toolboxes the edges can become damaged and chip. A floating floor of some type would work well but cost a lot comparatively. You are on the right track with an epoxy. It lasts long, has no maintenance, and is a nice continuos surface to work on. The tile does make a nice work bench top though. I used marble on mine and love it. It is perfectly flat and you cant burn it. Both things I like

Seeing as the floor is older you need to acid etch it before epoxy coating, I have done several floors including a 12k square foot airplane hangar. The cleaner the floor the better the adhesion. I two part with a primer is best. The primer is integral in prepping the surface to better accept the paint.

Make sure you get some before, during and after photos. I've been thinking of doing this to my garage for some time now, and would like to see how you go about it.

Interesting that this comes up as I'm starting my hobby room build.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll do that. Going to push building the benches back but I want to get it done correctly.
