My Digger totally lunched the spider gears in the rear diff. I ordered some HPI 86014 gears to try.

While I have it apart I want to install shims to help avoid stripping more gears. I also want to shim the front and rear axles so there isn't a lot of side to side/in and out play. The in and out play seems to be more of a problem in the front. If any of you know which shims to get I'd appreciate the info.

Did they break where the axles go into the larger gears? That's what always happened to mine. I gave up on ar60 axles on my MTs. I am going to give them one more shot with my SMT, hoping they will hold up to the smaller 2.2 wheels and tires.

I'm honestly not sure yet. I took the diff cover off of the rear axle and saw the ring and pinion were fine so I just assumed the spider gears were shot. I'll find out more when I open it up.

I guarantee that's what you will find inside the diff cup.

I beat my RCs, but I haven't beaten hard on this truck yet. I can see why you gave up on AR60 axles. Do you run Freestyle axles exclusively?

I'd be open to different axles, but I want something smaller and more scale looking than Freestyle.

3 sets of freestyle, a few clods, and trying ar60s with a smt10. I don't beat these trucks they are racers. I was never beating a truck when ar60 diffs let me down several times. Freestyle or Mad/Max force axles are the only way to go with clod sized tires on a shafty IMO.

If you are not racing put lockers in it and you will be good.

The SMT10 barely turns as it is because the lower suspension links limit steering throw. I'd think lockers would make it even worse.

I printed some green beadlock rings for the Digger. I do like these. Not sure if they'll stay though.

Freestyle FTW

I have been using Axials spider gears on my SMT10 shimmed tight with very good results!!

I did too, until they broke.

If you get them to work for you that's awesome, cheaper than Freestyles, lol.

The Grave Digger toasted the rear diff. When I opened it up the stock ring and pinion were the gears that were munched.

I installed the HD ring and pinion. I believe this is the under drive gearing. I forget offhand. EDIT: It's the 38T / 13T gearing which is stock on the SMT10.

I also installed the HPI spider gears. They are tighter than the Axial gears so there wasn't any play or room to add shims.

The Monster Bolt came with these STRC holders. I thought I'd try them here to see if they help.

Now I have to install the HD gears in the front and T-Maxx driveshafts.

did this fix your issue?

I just bought an SMT10 (got it last night actually!) and before I stuff a 3500KV brushless in it I want to fortify it like you've done.

I just bought a set of the HPI spiders and front and rear axial hd 43/13 gears. My rig is about to eat its second set of stock gears..hopefully the better mesh and hardened steel of the under drive gear set will make them last much longer and I can find the next weal link lol!

I've only had a chance to drive it once or twice. You will eventually need the HD ring and pinion set. And proper shimming goes a long way.

I've heard mixed things about the HPI spider gears. Some claim they are stronger while others claim they are as weak as Axial's. I switched to a spool / locker in the rear axle of my Monster bolt.
