Thanks Chad !! It's a gift for giving me the idea for Rover's chassis. Your design is soooo simple yet soooo smart.

The idea for the BTA came after that discussion we all had at the last Papago comp. Your pop's 2.2 had a nice set-up there also.

Metomwhou, The transmission plates are aftermarket Tamiya parts I got from E-bay. They're layed down and cut off, I think this can be done with the stock plates too.

Did you ever put up some vids of the Buster? And where did you get that alloy tranny on Buster?
The new ride is pretty fun, I had a blast building it up.

The tranmission plates on Buster are Tamiya Hop-Up options. I got them off E-Bay for $30.00 from a vendor in Hong Kong a long time ago.

Here's a vid of Buster. I try not to cheat off the wall, but it's there.

Default Project MOAB

Well Buster was in need of a complete o-haul after a rough year of crawling and comping. Then I got invited to the Nationals !!! Now it's a complete makeover.

First off was finding something to do with my 3rd channel. PARC allows rear steer in the 2.2 class, it's a cheap and dependable alterative to dig/burn. I've been planning to build a USRCCA legal crawler for events outside PARC, now I have a deadline, Sept 9th. I've seen several driveshaft based dig/burn mechanisms, but I wanted something more transfer case-ish....

Grover and I had another post comp pow-wow several months and after alot of reseach and parts shopping, here she is !!!

I wanted parts that are widely avalible and tryed not to machine too many parts. Most of the parts are from the venerable PEDE tranny, there's a RC10GT diff gear, a couple of modded TLT spur gear hubs, a 5mm ti shaft from a bicycle quick release, and the REVO shift puck. There are only two machined parts, a heavily modded RC10L rear axle and a REVO output shaft ( thanx wrmorrison ) both involved with the transfer case.

The RC10L I got the axle from gave me several chassis ideas. I'm going to try and use the transmission as part of the chassis ala indy cars, the suspension will look alot like two pan car rear pods used front and back.

MORE TO COME...

that is incredible work! I like idea of the tranny mounted dig, seems like it would be stouter than the driveshaft version. How long is that whole setup?

The whole assembly is 3" long ( that the output shaft length ). The transmission and transfer case are 2 3/8". It's a bit longer than most other transmissions out there but I can use stock PEDE drive shafts front and rear.

Thanks, it's alot of fun building a transmission ( alot easier the second time around ), ya all need to try it !!!

I should have the chassis mocked up for pics late tonite....see ya than.

Default Buster Chassis V.2

Now that I've got the transmission/tranfercase done, how to mount it to my TLT axles ??!!??

I traded Rover to Mitch for a couple of old RC10L pan cars and wanted to make try that pod style suspension. First I fabbed up chassis plates and T-Bars for the axles. I'm using the capture ball pivot from the 10Ls, one on each end and the laid down shock set-up.

I mounted the chassis plates to either end of the transmission to intergrate the trans into the chassis. The axle and T-Bars ( look more like Y-Bars ) mount to the chassis via the ball pivot and are stablized by two pairs of tierods.

The front pod

The rear pod

Bottom shot, I still need to make a skidplate.

All I have left is the body mounts, skidplate, a brace for the front like on the back, and run some electronics. I hope to go test crawling with the other PARC crawlers this Sunday, I post up pics and vids than.

Very nice way out side the box. How flexy is it! What material is the chassis!

I use a mix of Kydex for parts I need to flex and give, like the U-Plates. The parts that needed more rigidity, chassis plates and the transmission/transfer case bulkheads, are made G-10 fiberglass chassis stock.

I got a chance to fab up a skid plate and body mounts last night and went out to do some test crawling today, VERY GOOD !!! The chassis and suspension flex and articulate perfect.

Some body off shots with all the electronics installed.

As for the dig, WOW !!! It'll take some practice but you can do some funky pivots and turn with it. I tried putting my weighted tires on the rear to help with the dig. This worked good in the dirt but was too much on the rocks, it also killed Buster's vertical climbing. After swapping them back I tried again with beeter success. The front-drive only option works great too, mostly on climbs where the rear tires are suck and they try to flip you.

I still have some tuning to do and need LOTS of practice before Moab.

I cant wait to see this rig in person. That chassis is top notch! I am not sure what the shocks do for the ride though. Do they flex a hair as the axles twist?
