Time for my little rant...

I hate my job. We used to run hard July to October during harvest then kick back a little while we filled storages to carry us till December. We would typically run out of spuds late December and begin hauling in seed potatoes early February.

During harvest we would get 3-7 days off while the chip (kettle foods) ran organic spuds. We do not grow organic potatoes. We would usually have a week or so not spent hauling between the end of filling storage until we could start pulling from the first storage we filled.

Between time hauling I'd go to the shop or work in the wash shed repairing equipment, fabricating new conveyor belts or in the shop repairing trucks.
This was a 5-6 day a week deal. There was down time, things changed and money was decent enough.

Fast forward to summer of 2017 and we took over the contract to haul all of the spuds into the plant. Ours and 3 out of 4 other growers organics included. Now there is no down time, go go GO! Is my life now and I'm about burned out. I typically get a day off a week and that is half burned up by driving 5 hours home because my load delivered late at night so I need to sleep before coming home or the plant is behind 2-8 hours so I get to sit doing nothing while I wait.

I was supposed to have last weekend off. The plant was running 6 hours behind so I didnt get home until noon Saturday and then found out I was headed back out 11 am Sunday. This was after running 11 days straight. Got the schedule this am and after being told I had tomorrow off several times this passed week I was scheduled to go out again tomorrow afternoon. I about lost my shit. My niece is the one that puts the schedule together and she knew I was just a little more than perturbed so I got a text that she changed things so I'm off tomorrow. Fawk this, I'm so important to the farm I can't possibly have any sort of life of my own? I got bad news for them...

Tldr; I'm a whiny biatch that wants time spent outside of a semi. Time to go find a new job.
LOL, that sounds like an parallel version of what was happening at my last job only in a different field of profession.

It's how it is, somehow we brought this all on ourselves. Creating tools to be more "efficient", more "productive", etc.

What everyone thinks initially. "If we do x, y, z... it'll be more efficient, and we can get done quicker and have some time to do self fulfillment/improvement type stuff".

What actually happens when some head guy sees the idea. "Damn, if they get stuff done this quick... we can cram even more work in and get even more stuff done! Keep them going with no downtime!"

Yup, the reward for efficiency is more work.

I actually posted that rant in a rant thread on a different site a couple days ago. Then the night before last my brother calls me and the first thing he says is "You ready to get off the road yet?" Yes, just updated my resume the day before. Turns out they're hiring drivers out at the nuke joint he works at. I'm going to fawking hate it but I'll work there for a year or so until the paper mill they're building near me gets finished and I can get on as a millwright.

In the meantime I'll enjoy the $20k raise, full bennies and 9 9's with holidays off.

In 2008 I started working for an electrical supply warehouse. Due to the downturn in the economy, they cut everyone's pay by 10%. (company revenues were fine, it's not like they lost 10% of sales, but I digress)

2 weeks later, right after the first paycheck hits the owner shows up driving one of those 1 million dollar plus RV's. Parents were in town and were going to be staying in it for whatever reason. He parked it right in the first row of employee parking where it had the best lighting for "security" So for 2 weeks, the employees who just had their pay cut had to park in back and walk around this gleaming monstrosity to get into work.

Talk about tone deaf!

Oh, and the workers never got their 10% back. Became their new base pay. However a 12 months after the pay cut, upper management got significant bonuses and pay increases. I quit and moved on as did many others including the controller, the entire HR team, and 3 top salespeople, plus god knows who else after I left.

I've always had the opinion that you should be careful how hard you bust your ass for certain employers. Sometimes your "reward" for that hard work is more work.

As for Right to Work, I know it doesn't prevent the formation of unions, but it gives an employer power to weaken them by giving preference to non-members.

The sad part is that the company provably used that exodus to hire cheaper replacements.

Along the same lines as one of the previous posts . . . however, I'm a government employee, I teach at the local university . . .

The leader of our group worked about a year then he quit - they paid him $19,230.76 each week for six months because . . . they wanted to give him a nice "good bye present?"

And this was all public information but . . . nobody got fired for this?

Incredible!

Meanwhile, everyone in my department was given "substantially" more workload recently . . . and we all have to pay much more for parking than students do . . . and, according to information that is publicly available, our group is "highly underpaid" compared to similar institutions and careers but when we inquire (in large meetings) about the possibility of getting inline with salaries to approach other universities, we hear "Yeah, well, I will mention that in my meeting with the President" . . . then the all too common sound of crickets chirping . . . as months pass by and cries from the little people remain . . . unheard . . .

I'm in a "five-on-two" situation as I am locked into Georgia's educational system - it would be significantly damaging to my retirement package to jump ship at this point, near the end of my career - so, I just go along with it . . . like all the other sheeple . . . (ha) . . .

Meanwhile, my adult daughter has a seizure and our insurance is . . . I'm not even going there . . . the ambulance trip (all two and a half miles) to the hospital was more than $1,100 . . . the good news is that she's doing fine and her seizure was the result of incorrect prescription from her doctor so, she probably won't have another grand mal seizure again . . . yay!

Sorry to ramble . . . it's all just part of being a useless college professor (ha)

Don't worry they'll go bankrupt and nobody will get anything but higher utility rates to show for it after CA splits them up under monopoly laws.

Correct.

Employers view employee through a financial lense, hence it turns employee into an object.

Employee view employer as a guardian, hence it turns employer into a high valued person.

Physical slavery is illegal hence financial slavery is legal. If there are no slaves, then there won't be great empires built. Sad unspoken reality of life.

Having less emotions and being more strategic is advantageous in a capitalist world.

So that means California fires were caused by PG&E?

"Cal Fire has determined that of the 21 major fires last fall in Northern California, at least 17 were caused by power lines, poles and other equipment owned by Pacific Gas and Electric Company."

Indeed. I've had employers that couldn't care less, and I've had employers that cared to a surprising high degree. You don't know until you know.

All in all I get along really well with my boss, and to his credit he does go above and beyond for those that do the same. I can't complain about how he personally treats me. The service department as a whole is another matter, he tries to run it like he's thoroughly involved when he's not and usually ends up way out in the weeds with it. He also obsesses about numbers, which is maddening.

We could form a union that does not extend beyond the business, and no membership required. The limitations of power are wholly dependent on the amount of employees in the union. If it's only a few, it'd be pointless. If it's most or all, then you'd have a fighting chance at change.

Non-work related rant:

The SJW's needs to stop hammering on people that did stupid kid things when they were stupid kids that didn't cause personal harm doing it, and haven't done anything related since.

Ok, so.I was in a fairly minor crash with a teenager who is dealing with her first winter as a driver a couple Sundays ago and there was minor body damage to both her Jetta and my 200, but the impact also knocked out my steering so I had the car towed home since it was just a few blocks from there. Not mad at the girl since the roads were kinda crappy and it appears that the city didn't salt that intersection until after I called 911 to report the crash. Also not upset with the towing company or their driver, requested the same driver take the car to the dealer to get the steering fixed and as of right now would use them again. Now on to the frustration........

I called my insurer shortly after getting the car unloaded and the CSR was nice as well as helpful, seemed kinda relieved when I told her I'm also a CSR in a different industry (seems easier to work with "one of your own", I guess) as was the adjuster I talked to the next evening. Now it took until the end of the week for the appraiser to come to the house to look at the car and the body damage was appraised at $1200, minus the $500 deductable and I then just had to get it to where I was going to get it fixed. I chose tk send it to the dealer I bought it from since I bought the lifetime extended warranty when I bought it 7 years ago and that is how you don't screw with the warranty in this situation. Car seems to have made it there ok and the dealer doesn't want to put it on a lift until the appraiser is there since it's a PITA to move around right now. I called the appraiser and left him a message about what is going on and where the car is and he needs to be there to get the car on the lift to eval the mechanical damage. At this point I have called 5-6 times and now left 3 messages to call me since Thursday and see what was going on and have yet to hear from him.

This is with my company, not her's too

I'm hoping I just paid off the last of what my insurance didn't cover from 2017 and 2018, but yeah, not gonna argue here.

Yep, I have BCBS also. My specialist visits are supposed to be $50 per visit. I asked multiple times during my PT treatment why I wasn't being billed. Only to get blindsided by a bill months later that would buy a nice used dirt bike, and I have insurance FFS. I swear there are times I feel like the harder I work, the worse things get. Meanwhile I watch ex friends and family members get high, play video games all day, and we pay for it and they just breeze through life without a care in the world. I think it's time for Bacon's rebellion 2.0.
