Hello Everybody! I am kind of new to crawler/scaler. I am planning on a tube chassis build and have a couple hitec 625mg servos. Was wondering if anybody had experience with them? Thanks

What do you want to use the 625mg for? It will not be any where near enough for steering. You could use it for a dig unit.

That answers my question then. How do you calculate what you need in a servo?

How heavy is your rig? 1.5, 1.9 or 2.2?

My rig is at about the 8lb mark and I run 1.9 Pitbulls. Hitec 7950TH is my current servo with a Castle Creations BEC. No issues.

I had a Hitec 7955 and didn't like it. I had a Hitec 5995TG and it did really well. I've killed a few Hitec 645MG's. Yea, diehard Hitec fan.

The current setup will be with 2.2 hammers on beadlock wheels. Just started the build though. Hoping to get a build thread on here once things get going and parts are coming in. It is a custom tube chassis I got on here a couple days ago. Probably going to end up running scx10 axles when I find them.

i would recommend the Hitec HS-7950TH. 493 ounces of torque and is waterproof. It is an awesome servo and I have one on my crawler and I also run a BEC.

Keep an eye out for a 7950 and a BEC. You won't be sorry. 7950's pop up every once and a while for $85-$90 used, but you gotta be quick to see it.

Nice, my second choice to that is the HS7955TG...running that in my Wraith with CCBEC works good but sometimes could use more. May swap that servo to my Honcho and buy the HS7950TH in my Wraith.

The only servos I am aware of that are waterproof are the new Hitec line of ugly blue cased servos 646WP and 5646WP with the latter one being digital and stronger @179 oz/in. All servos are made to keep dust and maybe a very little bit of splashing out of the case with rubber seals. These seals are by no means waterproof. Beyond that the top output shaft will allow water into the servo. Maybe I am wrong here, but it is NOT a good idea to dunk this $150 servo as you and your wallet will probably weep.

You can waterproof a servo yourself, but in my experience even sealing the case and using an o-ring on the output shaft is nowhere near a 100% reliable solution.

I am a big fan of the Hitec 7954SH. I think it is not very popular among folks on here. It offers 333 oz/in @ 6v and 403 oz/in at 7.4v. The real sweet part to me is that you can find them for $85ish which is almost half of what you pay for the high end titanium geared servos. Just my opinion.

I`ll second that. I had one in my sportman rig, and was happy with it. But about after 1,5 years of running it, it started to lose power, original torque just weren`t there anymore. Opened it, nothing seemed to be off inside. Maybe its miles just were up. After that I bought 7950, and that is on my XR-10 now.

But anyway, I think that 7954SH is good servo

My son & I run HiTec 7955's in our 1.9 comp rigs and 7950's in our 2.2 comp rigs.
We tried a couple of 7954's in our 2.2's (partly because of price) but had multiple issues with them dieing. Even though HiTec did repairs, we ended up selling them off and going to the 7950's.

So, based on our experience, I would likely NOT recommend the 7954 unless you have a lighter rig or are "just driving for fun".

This may be shooting myself in the foot, but in the past few months, I've manged to buy 4 7950's off of RCTech. Never paid more than $85 each. There should be an $80 7950 in the mail today in fact. Lol.

HS-7980TH Servo

I just ordered a 7980.

I've got 2 645mg's in my 9.5lb 4ws rig. While it works fine on the floors in my house, on the rocks it falls on it's face and I can't take it any more. I'm thinking this one will solve at least the front steering issue. I might try to find a 7950 for the rear, used. Or at least space out the buying so it's not so suspicious.

How does running 4ws effect a single bec?

Should be fine if you have a 7980 in the front and only a 645 in the rear. When you go dual 7980's or 7980/7950 you may need to add another and run a BEC to each servo, or step up to the CC BEC PRO.

hey guys, I bought a savox 0251mg, 222oz at 6.0v and .18 sec 60 degree servo. can i plug it directly in my ridgecrest's reciever or the esc won't be able to handle the additional power used of the servo and I risk burning up the internal BEC?

thanks in advance

222oz, isn't going to do all that well in a crawler to start with. You could probably get a way with it and deal with the occasional brown out, but normally I recomend a CC BEC for any servo over 200oz to eliminate that issue.

i'm doing a crawler/basher and so far even the stock servo with no BEC isn't doing too bad for me. it does stall on some rocks and climbs but i just back out of it. this one having almost twice the power for 40$ canadian, was by far the cheapest good quality(as far as i know) servo I could get my hands on since my budget was limited. thanks for the advice and I'll wait for the BEC to put the servo on.

as for that 600oz, I don't have 150$ to put on a servo right now...
