I think the 6 spokes would look better - lining the spokes up on the bolt holes seem to be the ticket.

I don't know what I'm talking about , but here goes.
For a better finish of the spokes, could you tilt your rotary table slightly and use a larger ball EM and rotate the wheel / rotary table, off center to get an even and better finish on the radius of the spokes?
Does that make sence?

6 spokes it will be, though I'm thinking the spokes should run between the bolt holes....

I was with you, then you lost me at "off center".

I was meaning the "wheel " would be off center to the end mill, so when you rotated the rotary table the EM would be cutting around the center.
That way you might use a larger ball end EM to cut the radius on the spokes.

Increased surface speed by using the upper part of the ball...

Thats what I thought you meant, but wasn't sure.

Progress made. Almost time to cut spokes...though I may hog out the backsides first. Not sure yet.

Do you run finish passes? I know for manual it would basically mean doing everything twice, but it will smooth out your finish.

Usually. My machine isn't rock solid, so I can't take big heavy passes anyway. I take big bites until I get within .005-.010 of my mark, then make a light last pass.

The outer concaved radius on the wheel was done with a 1/2" ball endmill running 2500 rpm and is as smooth as it gets. The inner convexed radius was done with a 5/32" corner rounding bit running the same speed and is wonderfully smooth.

Win some, lose some.

Not to shabby for my first official wheel IMO. Can't wait to get some rubber bolted on.

to help improve your finish, you can drag your axis locks give them (x and y and the table z for that matter (and rotary!)) a light snug, enough to add drag you can feel but not so much that you have to use two hands to move each axis. make sure your quill is all the way up and locked whenever possible, you always want your tool and quill as stubby as possible. rigidity is one major key to good finish. runout on your tool is another...

as your cutting, put your finger around to sence for vibration, you can feel where any loss of rigidity is coming from...

and great job mank, your doing semi advanced manual mill work ! ...

hey how much for a set of 4 !! .... haha ..... Dr evil .... one million dollars ....

Pssstttt - I'm military, everyone knows we get paid like ballers!!
No really - the spoke placement looks spot on. Good eye and nice work.

There are some known issues with the rf30, most of them involve vibrations and a little bit of runout. There are definitely some harmonics going on, but I haven't gotten around to seeing if I can dull them down yet. Now that I'm more concerned about surface finish they are on the list.

I always try to mill with the head as low as possible, that was something I learned early on.

Thanks for the heads up though, its always appreciated.

Let me put it another way: they'd cost more than they're worth.

Thanks for the kind words.

Got all the beadlock grooves cut last night, then made a real light pass over all of the vertical surfaces again...it looks much better.

Once I get the others done I'll clean up the top of the spokes and dump them in the tumbler for a few days.
