I threw some primer on part of the body to check it. Most of it looks good but parts of the roof still need attention...OY!
note new wheels...

those are aluminum Topcad 1/10 touring car wheels. I thought they looked pretty close to OEM montero 6 spokes, close enough anyway. They're also unique among the builds which I like.

needed a skid for the t-case. Didn't want to bother a friend (again) for some cnc work so I decided to try making one with crude hand tools. measured it up, drew a template and transferred it to sheet metal.

then used a 4" angle grinder and vice to cut and fold the thing. Didnt come out too bad but still needs cleaning up with a dremel.

transfer case is installed and man is it small...

did the binding of the radio, plugged in a battery and tried it out to check the driveshafts for binding or other problems. Problem I found is that I think the motor I have is f'd up. Its a used 55t I got with some parts I bought a long time ago. When I give throttle it clicks and clacks like a mounting screw is hitting the brushes or something is physically blocking it turning. So I methodically disassembled one thing at a time and with the motor in my hand, mounted to nothing but the power wires it did the same. I'm guessing the motor is bad. However, I then unpacked my fifty-five, which I have nip for another build, and loosely connected some wires to it. it also had some trouble but did manage to turn, although it was fits and starts with that one, not smooth operation. This I could attribute to not having a solid connection since I just held bare wire ends to the motor and plugs with my hands.

any comments on the motor issue?
its a stick radio so I tried several different channels for throttle, currently on the left stick up-down.

Looks good so far. Man you need to show off that T-case. As for the motor. I can never really dio a problem over the computer. You sure theres no binding in the shafts by the output? The front axle looks a little sharp, JMO.

driveline hanging was a shot taken before t-case installed...

I'll have to check. someone else suggested the magnetic nature of the motor may have picked up some debris. I mean its been mounted for a long time where I've been drilling and such around it...
I'll have to check the brushes as you say.

Although I got the motor used so I dont know for sure it ran when I got it.

front axle sharp? you mean from gd600 to t-case right? because both driveshafts are pretty mellow angled compared to my other rigs.

You mean the output of the motor or the gd600? no binding at output of gd600. I disconnected the gd600 from t-case and still did it. Then I disconnected the motor from the gd600 so it was just a loose motor. still did it.
It does sound like something is inside blocking it so I'll have to take a closer look as I didnt think of something being inside the actual motor...

Thanks guys.

it was surprisingly easy to make.
if I didnt have to pull out all my tools from the closet and clean up afterwards (I work in my dining room, except the grinder) I could have finished it in 15 minutes...

you coming tomorrow? I'm bringing the montero for a show and tell...

I took the motor apart and there was a tiny washer in there. now I can turn it by hand.
however, reinstalled and it still does the same thing. I'm thinking I got another washer or something in there when I reassembled it.

prior to doing that though, I tried a different rx/tx without anything different happening, and I tried separating the rx and esc thinking maybe there was interference. no change.
then I disassembled the motor.

Today I got the Castle Link out and hooked everything up to my work PC. Programmed it for "Brushed reversing" and adjusted all the curves and levels on it (drag brake, etc) for now. turned it on and still no motor! W-T-F?

Then I remembered what Khan told me about how some of the mamba's running brushed need to swap one of the red/black wires with the unused white wire. tried it and it works like a charm now!

I'm dissappointed the Mamba manual isnt clear enough about how one NEEDS the Link to program it if its brushed...theres no way to change the default settings without it.

It looks like you are using the HPI WK reduction unit. Am I right?

yes, the motor is connected to the HPI unit, which is connected to the gd600.

It's not out of anything. It's just a gear reduction by itself. They use them in planes. Edit..Damn, he beat me to it..
