I'm new to the forum here and I just got back into rc after being out for the last twenty years. I wanted to do a metal bodied 79 Ford but then i saw this build lol. Now i really need to step up my game. Great build. I can't wait to see it take some hits on the rocks to give it character.

^^ i've started on a chassis a couple years ago and was planning to build molds and stuff of a 79 ford f150 and shape body panels like metal masher does.. i know it'll be a lot of work but should be worth it. i'll get back to it eventually had some stuff come up that takes prority

Ok guys it's finally that time! yes i'm going back onto this build!

My other obligations are starting to wrap up and i recently got some inspiration from a good fried of mine the helped me out with the front axle.

A little recap, the front axle is a hybrid of original Bruiser and Axial parts with custom adapters made by Rob.

The axle worked great but the problem was the pinion. pointing strait back i kept busting shafts when the suspension droops out. i filed the perches to turn the pinion up but if course now the caster was way off. I decided i needed a way to adjust the caster and devised a plan to make new C's that would allow my knuckles to rotate on the axle. Here is the design i made

And here is the motivation. A package from Rob

The workmanship is outstanding!

Now It takes some commitment to use them as it's necessary to remove the last remaining ears on the end of the axle. Rob cleaned up the ends and matched the C to the axle

the fit is spot on

Now i am able to put the caster exactly where i want

The next step is to install some threaded inserts. I looked at buying a kit but the $60 plus price tag kept me away. Then when i found out i could buy just the tap for $15 i devised a way to install them by using an old broken Allen wrench

A simple slot in the end and i'm in business

the knuckle test fitted

and on the axle i still have gobs of steering

I don't have the correct set screws yet so i threw a cap screw in and mounted the axle under the truck.

the other bonus with this set-up in the ability to locate the tie rod over the springs for more clearance.

Here is how it works. fully extended the pinion is just above horizontal. there is lots of caster but the steering won't bind

At full compression the knuckle is just at vertical

And at ride height the caster and pinion are right about where i want them

The only wheels and tires i had were some small MTZ's but it let me take a look at the stance

The obligatory flex shot

and just for fun threw the body on

Yep!

That's all for now but i hope to show more progress now that i have some motivation!

Would a set of high steer knuckles help with the caster? Like these http://www.vanquishproducts.com/vp-h...ackermann.html

It's good to see your back on it!

Rob, you sir are a awesome machinist!

Holy cow! On behalf of everyone on here, we can't wait to see this thing completed. I wish I could shrink myself just so I could get in this thing and drive it.

Thanks but i can't take credit for the machine work, Rob from our club deserves all the credit.

I like the design better than the rummy C's as well but it does take commitment to perform the mod since you are cutting off the remaining ears that hold the axle halves together.

I won't have time to test it before the Scale challenge so hopefully they hold up

I wish i would have come up with the design years ago when everyone was modding these axles. I probibly could have made some money.
