Ok, so I got all the cage work done. Added a front fare lead and rear panel. Also made some 24 gage inner fenders to hide electronics, but not hide tube work. Took time today to get the final sand blast, and throw color at it. While I waited on the paint to dry I worked on my scale goodness. Inner fenders Cage and body panels And scale goodness. Hope you like. I'm going to try to not touch it for at least 48 hours, but I'm very impatient. |

If this makes it to Disney, you had better sleep with it under your arm at night. Not saying I'd steal it, but I might sneak off and cuddle with it like it were mine.

Poprivet, you amaze me, your attention to detail is amazing. U.N.C.L.E. is by far one of the best rock racer builds I've seen on here. I started working on your winch this weekend, not sure which one your going to get. That Salox is fighting me the whole way. I'm going to give it one more chance tomorrow to play nice. Keep up the good work young man. I pretty sure we are going to have to get together this fall when we go on our trip. Ernie, |

Thank you sir. I've learned a lot from watching guys like you. Thank you again and again for the winch work. What is it about the savox that makes it different from others? Last edited by Poprivet; 05-22-2016 at 09:37 PM. |

It isn't that it is a savox, but more that I think it has a hex on it. To be able to put the spool on the inside the main gear needs to be drilled out to the inside of the servo. It already has 3mm threads on the splined top part on it but after I drilled it out, ( I think it was titanium) it needed to be tapped 3mm all the way through. Guess what broke on the last few turns? Yep the tap. Was there enough tap sticking out to grab it to back it out? Nope! The noise you hear is me scratching my head. Ok figured it out, since we don't use the spline for anything,I took the gear out and chucked it up in the lathe and turned enough of it away from the broken tap to grab the tap with pair of small vise grips. So I have the drum turned, a shaft done with 3mm threads cut in it, the servo body cut for the drum, cut two SS stand offs, and a bearing mounted in the bottom for the drum shaft. Started to put it back together and plugged it in to test it and after about 10 sec the motor starts whistling. I greased all the gears, put it back together, plugged it in ran about 10 sec whistling starts again, it's turning fine. I know these servos are noisy but.......? So that's where I left it for the day. I will take it apart tomorrow and figure what is going on. These are the things that I love best about building, is having to use my brain a little to figure out all the unexpecteds that pop up!!! Life would be pretty boring if everything always went as wanted it to. Ernie, Last edited by CODYBOY; 05-22-2016 at 10:40 PM. |

Well as complicated as it sounds, I knew I had the right man for the job. If it gives you any more problems, scrap it. or if I need to pony up for more labor, let me know. Thanks again Ernie, you are the man! |

I took everything off the servo case but the motor, and it was still whistling like a sailor on shore leave. Soooooooooo I put some oil on each bushing of the motor, fixed!!!!!!!!!!! I should finish it tomorrow, and get it in the mail. Ernie,

The first 4 or 5 days were a little rough, slowly starting to feel better, at least I'm not walking bow legged any more. And the grapefruits are just peachy now. Ernie,

Well I learned a hard lesson in "pay attention to what your buying". I didn't realize the flat clear I bought was easy peel technology. Which means it's like spray on rubber. I had to re-blast the cage. There was no way to peal it all off. Easy peel my ass. I was able to rub it all off the body panels. The good news is that my buddy Ernie has sent me my new servo winch. So since the cage is bare again anyways. I will wait until the winch gets here, and fab/braze on a mount. In the meantime I finished my interior. All but the head, I stole it off my yeti. The seat belts are just ribbon and paperclips. Shoe goo'd on the bottom side. The gages are Gearhead bezels over the stock axial decal. Both Big bacon's idea. Looking good Poprivet!! To bad about your final cage coat! I like to use a flat acrylic clear to finish off my cages, it finishes it off with a nice tuff finish. That's a nice interior for tight fit, good detail. You should get the winch tomorrow or Friday, it was fun doing for you. So is most of that bad weather Northwest of you guys? hope so. Ernie, |

My plans for mounting it had to change though. There is just not enough room inside the cage, and everything has to be installed in a specific order. If the winch and mount were solid to the cage I wouldn't be able to fit the inner fenders. The inner fenders have to go in first, and they would block screw access. Its a vicious cycle. Same thing on the line tube. If it was hard mounted to the cage I wouldn't be able to fit my steering servo past it. I'm not real happy with the whole set up, but it is what it is, and since I already have the fare lead I gotta have a winch...right?. It does feel solid, and I believe it will work fine. I am super happy with the winch itself. Thanks again Ernie. You did a great job on them.. Fitment issues are my own fault for not planning room for it. With all the cage work finally done, I started laying out the electronics. I made these little zip ties rails to help with wiring. I need all the help I can get. Oh, it's gonna fit! I had to make a removable plate to relocate the esc to the rear. There was just not enough room up front after the servo winch was in. Last edited by Poprivet; 05-29-2016 at 02:39 PM. |
