I would like to hear some first hand experience with these portals as well. Can't believe there isn't more talk about them at least.

I love portals. They make a rig look good. The only issue I see is, center of gravity goes up.

IIRC back in 2012 I used to see a lot of buzz about portals. Wierd, people don't discuss them as much.

Partly correct imo to center of gravity. If you build the suspension correctly it doesn't have a high center of gravity.

They definitely look nice but wow $240 for all 4 portals without axles. Why not R1 portals? You could get R1 portals with the steering knuckle swap mod, some aluminum C hubs and end up with a whole extra set of axles for $80-$100 less. Keep your previous axles for another build or sell them for cash. I picked up a used set of R1 portals and bought the parts for 4WS with all 4 aluminum knuckles and stronger CVDs for about $140 shipped.
Do some notching & file some spots and you have lots of free steering angle. Tap a hole and use a spare set screw for a cheap secure locker.

the portal gears in the Gmade R1 Axles are super weak.

to the OP....My buddy had them, ran em for a little while and then removed them cause he kept braking the pins in the cv shaft going into the portal box on the stub shaft. Takeaway is that portals are great for a scale truck/Unimog etc, but not really the best for any performance or high power rig. Pick good lines and you wont even need the extra bit of axle clearance

I didn't see a mention of the kind of power he plans to put down, but I've seen 8-10 lb 2.2 builds on here here with 4S brushless not have issues. The CV shaft would also be replaced for a few $ like i suggested. I suppose the gears could be weak in some cases, but the only single issue I've read or heard about with the gears was due to the small bearing going bad. Much like the small AR60 pinion gear that can be solved with better better bearings,a bushing,or a bigger bearing. There is also the "Wraptor" C-hubs that let you use AR60 knuckles & axles. I'm running a Brood HHK R/T 35T on 4S. Not a monster but I can bash and beat the hell out of it without issue. For the price difference I think it's great bang for the buck. Especially if you get to keep the old axles or even sell them for $65+ to get some money back. You could potentially have upgraded R1s for less than half the cost of the RC4WD and save about $150. If money isn't concern I'd get the RC4WD but for many it is and the modded R1s offer great bang for the buck comparatively.

I have read the r1s are not that strong. motor will be a tekin roc, mmp esc in a scx10 with ar60 axles. maybe 4s 3s for sure

Damn. Tapatalk lost my reply...oh well.

There are multiple R1s and 8lb-10lb scale rigs with R1 axles using using the tekin,T8s,pro4s ect on 3s & 4s. Do a Google forum search and you'll find a few. IMO the R1 axles with the wheely king CVD mod or in your case even the "Wraptor" adapter are plenty strong. Those that have done the mods with a bushing or bearing upgrade have no fears or concerns with it. AR60s have been known to have diffs & pinions fail and they are still popular and considered durable. IMO I'd rather spend half as much $ on something I know or at least have seen work over something almost twice as much that I haven't seen handle any serious power. At the end of the day it's your $
Either way post a link to a build when you decide
