I've done the bushing update (HPI ones) with plastic housings and was originally concerned about the heat from the bushing/shaft wear causing the housing to deform. I took a closer look last night and I have a decent amount of slop after 4 hours of run time and its all in the pinion to bushing (more than with bearings). I grabbed a new bushing and its not very tight on the pinion shaft either. I also have the traxxas oilites so I test fit one of them and its the same looseness. For grins I put a new fast Eddie bearing in there and it's nice and tight.

Anyone else had a similar experience? It doesn't look like the vanquish ones made it to market as they can't be found on the web except for Harley's review.

They just have too many other products to get caught up on. Not sure when these might find their way into production. Still running my original set though and no issues.

Harley, are you using anything special for grease on your bushings?

No grease other than inside the axles. I just use a regular bearing grease from the auto parts store.

VP is obviously swamped with other stuff. However I just got a shipment of some more samples to try from another vendor that will get them on the market.

Just as a frame of reference, I am still running the very first set I ever installed in my Wraith axles. I have no idea how much run time is on them now

so..

traxxas , HPI silver ones, or thrust bearing?

I already have the traxxas bushings but I dont mind spending another $5 for a better option.

my stock bearings are still running good but thats because I have just a few hours with the 3656sd 3400kv 4-pole on 3s..before that it was just a 3300kv 2-pole on 8-cell nimh.

now that summer is about to end I will have my Baja wraith running again (cant running it with temps above 115 everyday) and want to prevent to crash the pinion bearing like most with 4-pole motors and 3s.. even without been one of the "select-few" ... even though, Im still worry

I tried pinion bushings. Created to much heat for my liking. The drive shafts actually got pretty warm from this. Also there was as much slop as a bad bearing after only one day of trailing.
I have since swapped to a set of dlux housing with bearing mod. Even after some pretty hard bashing I have not had any issues.

With the proper shims to keep pinion from moving in and out to keep a good mesh and a quality bearing like avid ($1.00), u should not have a problem. Ive been running this set up since february with a roc 412 3100 on 3 cells with zero slop.

linear slop will kill a bearing or bushing, no doubt about it. There's also 'wag the tail' syndrome at play here: think about it as the axle wagging the drive shaft and the bearing or bushing is the pivot. As the axle moves, the drive shaft must follow which puts a huge amount of stress on the pivot point...bearings don't like that sort of thing...that's what bushings were developed for.

For another option, I sell the Wraith housings with a 13mm bearing. I have sold quite a few now and have not heard anybody say they have blown bearings since swapping over to my modded housings.

13mm on the left, stock on the right

It's an associated sc10.2 SCT part # 7933. It's called a bearing crush tube. This is not a part that fits perfectly and all is good. I had to open the inner diameter with a small round file and cut the tube to length to fit so there was no in and out play. Sorry it's not just a bolt on item but with a bit of sanding and cutting to fit it should solve your problem
Tower hobby sells them.

Can you machine the VP AR60 housing to accommodate the larger bearing?

You can find 5mm ID shims in various thickness and outer diameter at A-Main, Tower and other hobby suppliers. Just stack a few on the input shaft until you have the shaft free of slop, but not overly tight. If you get it too tight this can wear-out the bearings quicker.

So, is there any final analysis of the thrust bearings? Or the VP bushings?
