I have a 4lb flat going today: Unfortunately, it has hit the dreaded "stall" and is actually temping backwards. On the plus side, I am loving the Christmas present my father got me: A two probe remote thermometer. It is nice to monitor these things from the comfort of my den... |

The price was insane but honestly, worth it. While we were on our honeymoon, my wife tried a crab-cake for the first time in her life. She immediately fell in love although those were Gulf Coast blue crabs... quite good but not at all as delicious as East Coast blues. When we got back home I told her that I wanted to get some crab-meat from MD... the crab that I grew up on. She was blown away by how much better these were... both the crab itself, as well as the recipe. Linton's out of Crisfield fwiw. Ah... JO. Got it. Never used that stuff before. Old Bay has always been my go-to. |

Hell, they're expensive to make even with canned crab meat. This is my last attempt, fresh off the grill. Guess I forgot to post them. And with grilled asparagus and remoulade. |

Those look mighty tasty! Funny... I also picked up some asparagus to have on the side, but whoops... the damn things are still in the fridge lol. I zeroed-in on making the crab-cakes and completely forgot to steam the asparagus. We were so stuffed though, that I'm not sure it even would've gotten eaten. Perfect side for crab imo. My nephew makes remoulade when he does crab-cakes but I have yet to make it for mine... Good stuff though.

Thanks! They were delicious, albeit time consuming and messy to make. I love grilled asparagus, it's one of my go to side items.

Ironically, most of the crab houses source their crabs from the Gulf of Mexico around Texas and a lot come from South Carolina. The bay is so polluted most of the crab population is really low in the upper and middle Chesapeake, you have to get close to VA waters to find good ones. ( right where the rock fish swim..) JO- I got turned on to it years ago and honestly prefer it to Old Bay. Those cakes that you and your new bride made, they look delicious. | |

The crab that I ordered from Linton's tasted much better than what I had on the Texas coast a couple weeks ago. I don't think they were caught too far from Crisfield because they were being cleaned and packed as I was ordering them. The fresh crab from the Gulf just wasn't quite as "clean" tasting although it was also fresh from the boat.

With seafood on my mind, I wandered into the expensive part of the seafood market at the local Wegmans.. Mahi-mahi in kit form ! The one on the right looks pissed off, it kinda creeped me out. |

Picked up some grub for this weekend cookouts. Smokers and grill ready to rock. Crab legs, porterhouse steaks, back ribs, burgers, thighs and wings. |

All looks good. But I've got a question. Doesn't anyone kill their own food anymore? No opportunities, no experience, no place to hunt? Just wondering is all. I mean, I can see the ocean stuff would be a little hard to get, but land animals are plentiful. As well as a lot of fish... I just cringe going into a grocery store, and look at what they have to offer as "fresh". Most of that stuff is covered up with chemicals to preserve it from going rotten. Was just curious, if anyone kills their own supper anymore? We do, mostly. Fish we get from buddies who live for it. The sport part, I like the eat part of fishing. We don't raise beef anymore, or hogs, so we buy 1/4 of each from a local farmer. We do harvest MANY whitetails, and that's our main meat source. And a couple turkeys, rabbits, squirrels... I've got this thing, about knowing where my food came from. |
