Box Elder Burl set, the larger one is about 12" diameter and 9-10" tall (IIRC, I sold this set a few year ago)

This is the same wood about 14" diameter.

This one is Spalted Aspen about 15" diameter.

Here are a few Birdhouse Christmas Ornaments. These are what I turn mostly these days. I sell most of them and give some as gifts and of course keep at least one for our family every year.

Learning to turn wood is the next thing that I want to accomplish

I'd suggest seeing if you have a local wood turning club and join or at least visit a meeting. I learned a lot that way. For me, turning works out well because it doesn't require the space and time that flat work does. As long as you aren't turning green (wet) wood you can normally walk away from it without too much problems.

We've got company coming this weekend so I put this together this afternoon to match the bench. Itll be getting sanded and first coat of stain tomorrow, same color as the bench.

Gate is genuine mahogany, 2 1/2 inches thick. Sidelite opens too, the top gate trellis is red cedar, and is mortised and tenon.

And in the last few days I made this poor mans ladder rack with sides. Most of the materials were scraps, I did buy the 12ft 2x4s. Sides are 3/4" subfloor, posts coming out of the bed sides are lagged in, the 12fts on the top rails are lagged in as well. 45* braces on the front mid section and the same braces on the rear. All of the corners have metal braces nailed in. I used latex exterior flat black paint.

Should hold 3-4yrds of mulch and a good bit of wood this fall/winter. I wont go putting a thousand lbs or anyhing on the rack, but it holds a 24ft walkboard and a couple of 32ft extensions nicely.

The lower is layers of 1/4 and 1/8 plywood, the upper is built around a piece of 3/4" PVC for the barrel. Grips are shaped out of basswood.

It opens too.

The locking system is a cut down wood screw, nail, and spring from a ballpoint pen.

Goofed around a while back and Made a desk for my daughter. Most of the oak except for the side panels and the drawer boxes were demoed from an office remodel. Some really nice wood came out of there, the top is 1" thick solid wood. Had to patch up a few old nail holes but ought last a while. made the molding too, you can see a few hiccups in there but oh well, that's what gives it character. The drawer bottoms were cabinet backs. The chair was made from imported Swiss Ikea wood though

I've been working off and on restoring an old student desk for my four year old niece. Got it free on the side of the road. I also have a future project of restoring and old potting table that came free with the house I bought. Got the metal frame painted black and the rest I'm going to paint orange and black. I'm gonna use it to store all my Harley tools and parts out in my shed. The latest thing I redid was an old wood plane I got at a yard sale. I took it all apart, painted all the metal, honed the blades and refinished all the wood. Looks about as good as when it was made in the 20's.

Shoulda took some before pictures, darn it! Most of the paint was gone. Rusty, nasty and it had a broken handle.

For this Christmas I'm working on the Winchester 1887 shotgun (One used by Schwarzenegger in Terminator 2). Not waiting to the last minute like I did with the Hellboy gun LOL

My wife agreed to give me a room in the house for me to work on hobby projects but was clear that it had to have a door so my "mid project mess" couldn't be seen.

After trim was applied...

Painted (it took hours to paint all those shelves, ugh)

And the door open...

I did all this while she was away for two weeks. She loved it and now has more room for "display items", lol
