snaponboy

its 22R with a Weber carb, no smog nothing its all gone

the O2 sensor is still in the exhaust manifold and it is still connected to the ignition control module

and is working and functioning properly

there is about 2 feet of exhaust between O2 sensor and Cat

the Cat mounts under the drivers seat under the cab there is heat shield welded to cab

so the cat goes in that area

then after the cat there is pipe and a muffler

the previous owner could not get it to pass smog and whole system needed replaced

I removed the smog crap then installed a Weber carb, and left the cat and O2 alone

and in the county I live in Nevada there is no smog

and its legal for me to remove the crap

I sell the truck to another person in my county or another person in a county in Nevada that has no smog, there are a few in Nevada

cause I asked at a used car lot next to the muffler stop

that's why I'm putting the cat back on

to be legal

The stuff you removed probably had an mass air sensor oxygen sensor etc those mix the air and fuel to run you truck and also burn off in the cat. Without those items your truck will need to be running very smooth to keep them happy. Older vehicles have had cats without alot of electronics to make them work. So asking your mechanic to help you should insure you don't have to buy the parts again. If only it was the 80's you could go to a muffler shop or mechanic and have them install a red tube called a "diagnostic tube " and that would let you slide if you got pulled over, but not for inspection. I've got a truck without all the emissions stuff also it stays at the deer leese.
You think WAY too hard about simple things. The air/fuel ratio would have to be off the charts wrong to have a lick of a chance of doing damage to the cat.

For the price of a the crap going into this project a harbor freight welder could be in the gatage and some parts store exhaust bends could have already been boogered under the truck.

that would be a waste of money and my time

I don't know how weld or even tack with a wire feed welder

and again I want to clamp it so it comes apart

cause sooner or later I'm going to need to replace the clutch

and why would keep cutting it and have keep re-welding it

back together when I can unclamp it and pull it apart

and then clamp it back together

and the truck has always ran rich

so that could have a lot to do with the cat and muffler plugging up

I got maybe less the $200 buck it in

and the last shop I went to when I had problems with my 95 GMC with a 6.5 liter diesel

was not Marks, it was a RV repair place the only place in town that work on diesels, he was out of town on a family problems

wanted to charge me $90 dollars a hour, there was a minimum of 2 hours

Mark only charges me around $50 to $60 for labor and fixed it in half the time the other place quoted me

I buy my own parts and bring them with me to save him time of not having to order parts

and my trucks are usually down a few hours to a few days

and all the parts I have replaced have saved me money cause Mark is not charging me to replace them or some other shop

and I saved money on the labor too,

by doing a lot of it my self

my Time I got nothing but time

I can't work my back has permanent nerve damage

so working on the truck is believe or not is in enjoyable to me

cause I love working with my hands

just don't get too do it all the time

that's why it takes me forever to finish a RC out cause once it down

I got nothing to work on

Learn, that's what I did...read a welding book and online tutorials, then get a bunch of scraps and practice.

If it always ran rich, then there's half yer problem. The exhaust unbolts from the collector on the manifold and again at the cat (front and rear). Too rich washes down the cylinder walls and wears out rings quickly....also runs like chit, wastes gas and will choke you out at traffic lights or while crawling down a sweet trail.

nope the cat was welded on both sides

so I had to cut it out

that's why I want to clamp the exhaust to together

no cutting or welding needed

My dad left me a Lincoln 225 ac arc welder

and a oxygen an propane gas welder setup that was used for heating and bending and cutting more than welding

I was going to buy a MiG / wire feed welder and the bottle setup to weld aluminum

but I decided that I would not use it enough to justify

spending a few hundred dollars on a welder and not us it

My welder has been the most usefull thing i have ever bought.

If you where near me i would buy that truck. Lift it, put it on 33's,
paint it black, put a 3rz in it and do a replica of marty mcfly's truck.

McFly's

Toyota was a 85

mine is a 87 different grill and body style

I traded a 84 Toyota truck that I blow up the clutch and when the clutch went so did something in the tranny and didn't want to put another $1000 in it for a new clutch and maybe a rebuilt tranny

My mechanic Marked wanted it badly for his son 16th birthday

we traded won't give details

his son didn't want it so Marks keeping it for him self to drive

if he ever gets the time to work on it and tear down the tranny and see what's broke

cause there was a loud bang some grinding noises then nothing

just the motor making a change in pitch cause the load from the tranny was gone

the engine just freewheeled

no clutch
no forward
no reverse
no tranny

Mark pulled the inspection plate for the clutch and the was no clutch disc and he could see chunks of chewed up metal

so something happened to the clutch and tranny

Still basically the same shape though.

I found this one on the side of the road on a property, i approached
the bloke but he wouldnt part with it. It was destined to be a Mcfly truck.
It's still sitting there so maybe i can talk him around one day.

I just love the fat boxy look of the older hiluxes.

The one i found also had the same yellow paint and shitty 80's graphics
mine has.

These trucks respond well with a 3rz in them. Not an overly hard conversion
and ten times nicer to drive.

When I was working construction and had to commute to work

I bought a 82 2 wheel drive Toyota pickup with a 22RE and drove the shit out of too until I got hit head on one night sitting at red light with my buddy in the truck

a guy jump an island and was doing about 50 plus miles per hour

I seen him coming at the last minute and could not get my seatbelt and door open fast enough

the truck was pretty much done

I sold it to a salvage yard for what I paid for it

With all of the emissions equipment ( crap, as you call it ) and stock carb gone, it ISN'T working properly. The system has been torn apart so it will no longer function. This is what a few people are trying to get you to understand.

When the clutch blows violently it usually takes out the tranny input shaft bearing and/or input shaft. Easy fix, but if it's got lots of miles prolly needs bearings in tranny too.

Default re: I need help - we todd did

none of the smog equipment worked when I got the truck

the stock carb is still screwed up, I could not find anyone to rebuilt it

and if I did, it still would not work correctly cause none of the smog bullshit worked

because it would cost more to replace to the smog equipment

then the truck was worth that's why the previous sold it too me

and could not get it smogged in California

and was denied an exemption

I live in a county in Nevada that there is no smog

and it is perfectly legal for me to remove no functioning smog equipment , I asked a few times and was I told its legal to remove the smog bullshit

that's why I left the 02 alone, because it part of the ignition control module

I know it would run even shitter with out a 02 sensor

and I bought a replacement catalytic converter

and here in Nevada there are a shitload of desert trucks and rock crawlers and off road stuff, driven on the highways and city streets

with all the smog bullshit removed and the catalytic converter cut out running Webers and Holleys and Elderbrocks and some have mufflers some don't, some got spark arresters some don't

and its all good here in the desert

and its run what you brung

and the truck has ran a 100 percent better with the weber

then it did with the stock carb

it won't even idle that's how ****ed up the truck was and it would keep stalling and really hard to start

so by me removing dead smog equipment and throwing on a Weber

I made it drive able again

and have driven it for a little over 3 years without any major problems

until now and the Truck has got to be close to hitting 300,0000 miles

I can't tell you what the mileage is, cause I changed out, the original instrument cluster

for one from a SR5 Land Cruiser that has a Tachometer and it had 200,0000 miles plus on it

plus the 3 years of me driving it

so it was time for the catalytic converter to go out

same with the original ignition coil I replaced
